PlayStation 3 Selling Strong Down Under

Plus, the word on the localised movie download service.
by Cam Shea, IGN AU

Australia, July 29, 2008 - Nintendo Australia announced a few days ago that the Wii has sold through 500,000 units in Australia, and now we have the latest figures from Sony Australia to put that number in perspective. According to GfK, PlayStation 3 has sold through 305,000 units in Australia, which, considering the machine went on sale three months after the Wii, and is significantly more expensive, shows that Nintendo has plenty of competition in the Aussie videogame market.

According to Sony, the PS3 has sold faster than the PS2 and the PSP did by a similar stage in their life cycles. We should also mention the fact that the GfK figures don't include the PS3s given away as part of the Sony Bravia promotion. Throw those in and the number is over 375,000.

In other Aussie news, we have the local take on the video download service partnership announcements made at E3. Sadly, the news is not good. Video downloads aren't coming to Australian PS3s any time soon. While Sony Australia is committed to bringing the service out here, for the moment its focus is on other aspects of PSN.

PS3 is pretty close to 360 now, but it's worth pointing out a lot of those Bravia PS3s would not have been delivered yet.

It will be interesting to see which version of Soul Calibur IV charts highest in week 31.
