Yeh i'd have to say Goldeneye should be a little closer to the top. It redefined the genre and I think it should be ahead of both Halo and Half-Life, which are both franchises that I love.

I know this comes up in every "best of" thread, but "best" does not mean "influential." "Best" means best. I know that Goldeneye redefined the genre, but there's been a ton of better console FPS's since.

So then, could you please redefine 'best'?

This sounds a bit like a contradiction to me, it is placed 6th but there are ton's of better fps's since...?

Either you judge them contemporary or just put the old ID games and n64 shooters last.

Who needs to redefine? Relevant definition from dictionary.com:

"1.of the highest quality, excellence, or standing: the best work; the best students."

"'Casual games' are something the 'Game Industry' invented to explain away the Wii success instead of actually listening or looking at what Nintendo did. There is no 'casual strategy' from Nintendo. 'Accessible strategy', yes, but ‘casual gamers’ is just the 'Game Industry''s polite way of saying what they feel: 'retarded gamers'."

top 5 is about right... how the hell FEAR got in there is a mystery.

Well I would personally say that while it hasn't had the same kind of impact or influence like Doom, FEAR can almost definitely be called "the Doom 3 that Doom 3 should've been".

Yes I know they're completely different in terms of enemies and weapons but in it's truest form, FEAR is a see-and-shoot FPS. It's got such a wonderful old-school feel about it when it simply comes down to grabbing brutal weapons and blasting the fuck out of everything. It's a very simple game yes, but it's very rewarding and satisfying to those who are willing to forgive it's flaws (most particularly how samey it is throughout, but then isn't Doom as well?). It's got fantastic and genuinely skillful AI untouched by any other FPS, arguably the best shooting mechanics in an FPS (seriously, all weapons in that game feel incredible to just use) aided by brilliant enemy model physics, and it's SloMo adds a wonderful cinematic feel that makes every shoot out great and special in one way or another.

FEAR doesn't do alot, and it definitely doesn't do anything new for the FPS genre, but what little it does do, it excels at. I think it should be up there and at #17 I think it's placed very fairly and deservedly.

An honourable mention while I'm talking about FEAR in this light should also go to Painkiller, another FPS stripped down of the guts and polished to it's truest form, the old school FPS will never die!
