Then explain to me why the 360 is getting all the japanese support when its selling at a very slow rate in japan.

Tell me this 360 japanese support you speak of. If you actually look the wii has more jrpg exclusives than the 360, and also has other japanese games(tenchu IV, and Fatal Frame to name a few). This is without mentioning the microsoft moneyhatting.

I already know about the MS rpgs (Star Ocean, Tales, LO, Blue Dragon, etc). What are these phantom Wii rpgs?

My Top 5:

Shadow of the Colossus, Metal Gear Solid 3, Shenmue, Skies of Arcadia, Chrono Trigger

My 2 nex-gen systems: PS3 and Wii

Prediction Aug '08: We see the PSP2 released fall '09. Graphically, it's basically the same as the current system. UMD drive ditched and replaced by 4-8gb on board flash memory. Other upgrades: 2nd analog nub, touchscreen, blutooth, motion sensor. Design: Flip-style or slider. Size: Think Iphone. Cost: $199. Will be profitable on day 1.

Well every Japanese console gots his own Japanese games exclusives d'uh...

Soriku: and getting some main series games (KH, DQ, and Tales)

Possible but when SO 4 was announced for X360 I am pretty sure Sony is standing there also with a bag of money to be assure KH and DQ will be on the PS3.

Soriku: I think the Wii will be the home of original ideas that may turn into big (not FF or DQ big obviously - but still get sa good fanbase on them) games. Personally, for new Japanese IPs, the Wii is pretty much a haven for them. Thank God for companies like MMV.

Hope they will all not turn out in games like Opoona..

If Sony wanted series to stop moving they would've done that as soon as DQ IX was announced for the DS. Sorry, but I doubt Sony is going to pay anything for KH...let alone DQ.

Console=/=  handhelds.... And they paid SE before to get a game from them exclusive on their console.

You do realize how much sony would have to pay square enix for DQ right? DQVIII got about 75% of its sales from japan. Now why would square enix release the game on a console that is almost dead or some even call it dead in japan. Sony would probably have to pay about half of what square enix would make from putting it on the wii or the ds(if its still living then). Kh may be cheaper, but that is disney's decision, and I don't think disney would take a small amount.

 In most cases:

  1. Start the developing the game for the 360 and PS3
  2. Release the game on 360 while still tweaking everything to work on the PS3
  3. Add the extra content on the PS3 to make up for the delay
  4. Release the game on the PS3 like the "definite version"

While there are exclusives like Lost Oddisey, some are time-exclusives while the PS3 version is in the works with extra features.....

Sound like using the Xbox 360 in favor of the PS3. Many game developers will follow this pattern to get the extra sales making it "multiplatform"

And that's why Eternal Sonata is only being released on the ps3 in Japan. ;_;

Square got a whole new building in Central Tokyo somewhere in 95-96.  No way they could afford it;....Guess who paid it?

On a dead console?  Lol...  Looking to the sales of MGS4 I think they will not care much about it when they got some money from Sony.

Yes compared to the wii the ps3 is dead in japan. I expect LT sales of MGS4 to stop just under 1 mln. At the rate the wii is outselling the ps3 in japan the difference would be huge by the time square even thinks of DQXs developement. A spinoff of DQ on the wii sold about half of what I expect MGS4s life time japanese totals are. Lets say square releases DQX at 2011(the earliest it could be released imo.) The wii should have about 6.10mln sales in japan by 2011, without including christmas or big releases. The ps3 should have sold 1.38mln by then not including christmas and big releases. Now lets assume christmas has an equally big boost for both of them.(which would be in favor of the ps3). Now lets assume FFXIII and Versus move 500k console between the both of them. So without christmas the ps3 has about 4mln sales, and the wii has about 12.5mln sales.

Alright, now how many wii owners do you think also own a ds? Probably alot right since they both target the same demograph. Also which console has less devlopement costs?  Now which console sounds about right to put the game on? Like I said before sony would have to spend alot of money for DQ. Back then when they bought the building you are talking about they probably weren't losing billions of dollars. Yes sony is big, but they don't put their whole budget into gaming. If they did, I would expect them to try to buy/keep their exclusives now. So you can't expect sony to spend alot of their gaming budget on a game that wouldn't even help them, because it would most likely be released at the end of the generation. They might as well buy square enix.

There's is a high chance for a new IP to make DQ of FF a run for their money.

Last generation, the RPG battleground was the PS2. During this period there were RPGs that were as good and even better then FFs or DQs in substance, but is very hard to compete against franchise with a successful past that build up hype. It's what the fans expect. That's why new IPs had little chances.

On the other hand, since N64, Nintendo's consoles housed very few RPG's. On gamecube, ToS, SoA and BK were on their own very successful.  ToS has sold the most units than any other Tales game in America, and there are even gamers that think of it as the best RPG ever made. Namco's biggest mistake was to not push the franchise on the GC even more and went back to PS2 where it was "safer ground". they had all the chances and even more when Square relased Christal Chronicles and gave them the opportunity on a PLATINUM plate.

On Wii, there is an opportunity as golden as El Dorado. The mayority of Wii owners don't care if a game is a Final Fantasy or not, they aren't RPG fans and hype is almost null.... If a company can successfully make and market a Role Playing game fornthe platform, it's going to be really successful, given the wider installed base

Really interesting thread, that.

I particularily liked the person pointing out that the original post contained flawed logic and therefore stood on very shaky ground.

I also liked the 'Why developers hate the Wii' post. ^^
