Putting a DVD player into the Wii would be a complete waste of time anyways. I could understand wanting a Blu-ray player, but who honestly doesn't have a PS2, Xbox, Xbox 360, PS3, or just a freakin' stand-alone DVD player by now? They end up making less money on each Wii sold for a feature no one cares about.

There is no need, the Wii drive is a DVD player, but all it lacks is the software to actually playback DVD movies, which is why they could offer a DVD channel for those that want it rather than do it through the firmware to all wii owners.

I for one would definetely use it, it would be the most I would get out of the wii seeing as it's hardley used as it is.

If you don't use it, sell it and buy 10 DVD players then ;)

I would never get my money back, so I'd rather keep it, in any case I'll be picking up mario galaxy when it's dirt cheap later this year, I know my lil sister will like it.

If they can't do with via a firmware update, then they shouldn't bother at all.

Technically, I'm pretty sure they could. Legally, probably not unless they paid royalties for every single Wii which has already been sold.

I don't know much about the legal part though.

Yes technically they can because the Wii just uses your typical DVD technology but has all the DVD movie play back features striped, and they did this so they wouldn't have to pay royalties.

Now, they can make a FREE DVD channel for those that are interested, that way Nintendo will only have to pay royalties for those that have downloaded it rather than the whole wii install base.

Instead of it being free they could charge those who download it like 500 wii points. That should make up for the losses when implementing dvd.

Why should they charge for it when it should have come as standard, and this time around they have no excuse considering they use the same tech as other dvd tech.

This is why I said that it should be a free channel download for those that want it, that way their is room for them to save, it's either that or just abandon the whole thing and be done with it.

Maybe because they know people will buy a wii if it has dvd or not, and there gamers would rather want 3 or 4 more games with that money they could potentially lose. Nintendo is a very conservative company and didn't want dvd in the wii in the first place. So why should they spend their money to give dvd playback to every wii owner who wants it when they most likely already have a dvd player. They also have a strict policy of keeping their game consoles "game consoles" unlike sony and microsoft who think media center.

Thats true, but then why the internet channel?

so if they have a non game specific feature like the internet channel, why not have a DVD channel for those that want it?

perhaps like the internet channel, they could release the DVD channel free for a couple of months and then after a cut off period they start charging for it.

That could work, and they might do it after they get production up, but that doesn't seem like anytime soon.

i would support this and i know others would if the new models came with ....a hard rive

In my house we still own more VHS than DVDs (roughly 20-25 of each... 2 of those VHS and 7 DVDs are mine)

TAKE THAT TECHNOLOGY!

Or perhaps I should be writing to Nintendo to add VHS support to the Wii?

well seeing as the wii console already uses dated technology, I don't see the reason why they couldn't include it, so yeah, write that letter and make your wish come true.

yes master, the trolling force is strong among us, what is the world to do?!?!?!

Actually I thought your post was pretty funny :P It's just that you've done nothing but criticizing Nintendo in this thread:

"DVD should have come as a standard"
"DVD support would be the most I'd get out of the Wii"
etc...

I really recommend you sell your Wii.

Well it is my opinion that the wii should of come stadard with DVD playback, because right now I could use it as my DVD player in my room seeing as I still only have an old tube tv with limited connections and as of late I've been watching movies more than playing games in general, add to that the fact that my wii hasn't been turned on for a least 3 months, and you'll now see why I wanted DVD playback in the wii, it's so that I could actually USE my investment rather than have it sit and collet dust.
