I think Music games are actually dominating right now...sad to say.

I disagree. They're popular, but even Guitar Hero is still outdone by other franchises and that's by far the largest one. And what else is there, Rock Band? Are they making a sequel to that?

It will be much larger, but there are going to have to be a lot more series in the genre.

Yea, theres going to be a Rock Band 2.  Music games are getting big but I don't see them dominating.  Casual games and shooters are the two biggest.  MMOs are big but unless a game can replicate WoW like success it won't be dominate.

Hi, this is Vince with Shamwow.

Sports games have always been popular, just as fps's since Wolf3d, so have been Rpg's... dunno every genre has its peak when a killer game comes out.

right now fps is the dominante genre, but i thin in the near future that fighters will be the next one to dominate

Blizzard is the next "genre" that will dominate lol

Open-world action games. They're a dime-a-dozen right now.

Could I trouble you for some maple syrup to go with the plate of roffles you just served up?

Adventure games again? I wish!
I'd have to say the music genre is looking like the up-and-comer for gaming domination in the near future. I also like MontanaHatchet's logic on this one, but I think music games are driving it (peripheral-based gaming).

the next dominating genre will be either aerobic sport games like Wii Fit or mini-game compilations

Third Person Shooters

I think Platformers have a shot, although they have only been declining since the N64 days.

One thing is clear: Now that Nintendo is dominating again, it must be a "Nintendo-Genre". Typical Sony/Microsoft genre's like Shooters, Racers and also SciFi-RPG's probably won't have a shot. Since Nintendo's success is largely due to casual gamers, more complicated genre's like Action-Adventures are also unlikely.
Platformers are simpler than those genres but can still be considered core enough to be interesting for true gamers. The new-found casuals on the other hand might want to try classics like Mario platformers, and Nintendo seems to focus more on the genre again (Super Paper Mario, Wario Land on Wii or Kirby, Yoshi's Island on the DS).
