Forums - Gaming - Do you prefer Western or Japanese games?

In general, Japanese. There are a few games that are sometimes made outside of Japan which I love, though.

My favorite games this generation as SSBB, Wii Sports, Wii Play, Super Paper Mario, K Marble Mania, Trauma Center, GTA4, and everything Guitar Hero related so this generation leans heavy to Japan for me.

Japanese games tend to be less realistic and more fun.

western mainly, with the occasional japenese game

A little bit of both;Japanese and Western types of games.Although I do prefer Japanese storytelling to Western storytelling.

Let's see. INIS, Intelligent Systems and Atlus. Those sound like western names. Must be that.

Wow, great question. Overall, I'd have go with Japanese, though the West has been catching up pretty well over the past few years for me. For this gen in specific, my collection consists mostly of Western games, but of course that'll even out with RE5, the FF13's, Disgaea, the 360 etc. For the PS3 in specific there's been a dearth of Japanese games so far(MGS4 notwithstanding), so that's probably the reason. It's about a draw with an ever so slight favoring of Japanese made games, though.

Japanese games are always my preferred game. I only wish that some western writers could help the Japanese developers with there inability to write a different story.

Comparing one country to the whole Western world?

Well, I think it depends on genre. In general I'd say:

West: Sports, ARPG, FPS, TPS, Racing, Sandbox, RTS, Adventure, MMORPG. Typically - more 3D, fast-paced, large-scale, technically advanced, more hardcore, and slightly more risk-averse and conservative in game design.

Japan: Puzzle, SRPG, Turn-Based Sim/RPG, Platformer, 2D, Fighting, Educational.  Typically - more 2D, slow-paced, small-scale, technically behind, more casual, and slightly more risk-taking in trying out weird ideas.

Japanese devs have been somewhat good at coming up with some weird new stuff. But some of the Western devs are really good at evolving these ideas to a more sophisticated and advanced level.

For small-scale games I tend to look for Japanese ones because I like their wicked ideas. For large-scale epic games, I usually turn to Western devs.
