Looks like the price cut for the pro is confirmed to happen before E3:

Microsoft will cut the price of its most popular Xbox 360 model, the 20GB Pro, by $50 to $299 in the coming weeks, game industry sources have confirmed.

Microsoft would not comment, but a major retailer, which requested anonymity, said the price move will come before the major video game trade show, E3, which runs July 15-17 in Los Angeles.

Microsoft last cut the price of the Xbox 360 Pro -- from $399 to $349 -- in August, in many ways setting the stage for the huge successful rollout of "Halo 3" the following month.

While Microsoft does not have a "Halo"-style blockbuster on the horizon this year, the company is trying to compete both with the Nintendo Wii for a family/casual gaming audience, while also fending off Sony's Blu-ray-equipped PlayStation 3 in the market-share battle for the more hardcore players.

David Cole, president of the market research firm DFC Intelligence, suggested a move by Microsoft had been expected, adding that he didn't think this cut would trigger an immediate spike in Xbox 360 hardware sales.

But the drop, which now positions the Xbox 360 Pro $100 less than Sony's 40GB PlayStation 3, will play a larger role during the holiday selling season, Cole said, noting, "Clearly, whenever you have a price decrease it puts pressure on the competing systems, because price is one of the major factors consumers consider when deciding which system to buy."

While Sony could be pondering its own price cut, the consumer electronics giant did note recently in an annual report that the PlayStation 3 has cost the company $3.3 billion since its late 2006 launch because of a strategic decision to sell the system for less than it costs to make.

hmm...that bolded part might raise a few eyebrows...

LOL. Gears 2 anyone?

Just as people say with Resistance 2, why would Gears 2 boost sales? Isn't it safe to assume the Gears fanbase already has a 360????

iPhone = Great gaming device. Don't agree? Who cares, because you're wrong.

Currently playing:

Final Fantasy VI (iOS), Final Fantasy: Record Keeper (iOS) & Dragon Quest V (iOS)

Got a retro room? Post it here!

Potential Playstation 3 owners outweigh potential Xbox 360 owners. However this is a bold move in ensuring PS3 hardware doesn't move a muscle. Sony will respond if you see hardware increases in the Micrsosoft camp.

Improved sales ? Likely

Domination ? LOL

I think this will have the same somewhat muted impact as in Europe with the last price drop. Also I think Sony will counter if they see it is having too much impact - although I doubt it will but hey its a recession so price may swing more of a spike than I'd guess...

Still, nice to see as it will most certainly hasten the continued lowering of the cost of entry for HD consoles which is ultimately a good thing.

I get felling (felling?  WTF?  Sorry I'm both drunk and suffering from jet lag) Sony is going to take wind from MS sails from now through to December based on continued firmware updates and strong releases while Wii will continue to quietly (politely?) forge ahead of both combined.

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

I agree.  Microsoft won't DOMINATE.  They'll get a decent number of sales, and when the time is right, Sony will drop like a hat.

Not Necessarily. Not everyone cares about story so we'll see some sales from people who are only interested in the graphics and online play. Plus there are the people who played the first one with a friend and liked, but have not yet had sufficient reason to invest in a 360.  It should be a small boost, but a boost nonetheless.

I don't wanna be rude here... But isn't the Premium already down to 279?!... I can pick it up for 299 with Halo and GTA4...

(Euro's). But gaming-companies still tend to hold the 1$=1euro rate...

THE NETHERLANDS

Isnt it already $299? Cause a PS3 is only $399. So it needs to be a bit lower to combat the higher quality image of the ps3. $199 would be a great price.

Great !!

Finally !!

It will be funny to see at which point it is a event or a non-event ...

Time to Work !
