News: World Of Goo Leaves Wiiware

Posted by Mark Lee - Jun 26th 2008 10:06

World of Goo hits NoE’s summer 2008 release and suddenly a wiiware release is out of the question.

Having noticed NoE’s release schedule included World of Goo, N-Europe has now learned that RTL is planning to release both the Wii and PC versions of World of Goo as retail-only titles in Europe.

Speaking to an RTL representative, they highlighted the fact that although the title won’t see it’s release on wiiware, additional content (unavailable to Japan and the US) will make it’s way into the European retail version of the product.

Seen as one of the more innovative titles scheduled for wiiware, World of Goo certainly looked like a perfect fit for digital distribution. Infact, it seems like a strange decision to pull the proverbial rug from under it's feet. Have NoE got something to do with this or have RTL decided to forge their own path?

It will be interesting to see how World of Goo fares when sitting in-store. Will the added extras warrant a retail purchase or will the expected higher price point be a determining factor when it comes to sales? As long time followers of this unique title, N-Europe will be watching closely how the title fares here in the UK.

Does anybody have a clue as to why they would do this? What do they benfit to release it like a retail title?

Is it to avoid the storage problem?

As long as I can get this game, I'll be happy.

I can only guess that they figure Europians (who are major purchasers of more casual fare) will be willing to pay extra for it.

So Europe gets fracked again?

Both the Wiiware and PC version went retail, meaning it isn't about storage problems.

It probably has to do with the PC market being more robust in Europe and Others.

according to this thread it is because they basiccally ran out of cash and want an advance payment. Publishers are willing to make advanced payments, so they probably decided that Europe is the best place to use a publisher.

If you drop a PS3 right on top of a Wii, it would definitely defeat it. Not so sure about the Xbox360. - mancandy
