Forums - Website Topics - Looking for More News Staff

Hey all, I'm basically heading up the news team here right now.  Got a few people doing stuff but we're looking for more.  So far we've been doing some notable press releases (mostly myself) and analysis of our own sales numbers (mostly TheSource).  I'd like to expand a bit, and have started a few small interviews and the like.  It's also a slow news time heading into E3.  Anyway, what I'm looking for is people who:

- Have good writing skills

- Can write objectively (you don't have to be unbiased, you just have to be able to not *write* biased)

- Is interested in volunteering a few hours a week to write up a few articles a week

Interested folks should shoot an email over to news@vgchartz.com where myself and/or ioi will take a look and get back to you.  Include how you meet the above points and why you're interested, etc. etc.  Also include your geographic location - we're especially interested in people near LA, SF, NY, Tokyo, and other major cities inside and outside the US.

We're looking to do some interesting stuff in the near future, and ideally I'd like to see the news coverage expand to contain:

- Press releases; obvious really, usually only semi-important stuff like announced games or features, not as nice as exclusive stories but important to include to cover the bases; we do a lot of this already
- Game-specific interviews, probably close to release or just afterward for the most part tho can try to get some freshly-announced ones; starting some of this now
- Sales-specific interviews, ie: go talk to an analyst who makes a sales prediction and try to get a breakdown of the numbers or some more detailed reasons for the prediction
- Hands/eyes-on previews; short of commenting in released screenshots I don't see much progress in this area soon as we don't have access to media events and the like yet, though it is coming
- Site game reviews; could do this with high-profile titles at least at release if we get a sizable staff on it, would be good press if we got linked to GameRankings or MetaCritic.  Again we'd need a lot niore volunteers to do this and it wouldn't be any good if it was only a handful of titles.
- Sales analysis of our own, something like what TheSource is doing but more of it, with more Japan/worldwide numbers.  Seen some stuff posted on the forums that would've made a good front page article.
- Any other "feature articles" we come up with that doesn't really fit into the above categories, like staff picks of top 10 games for each platform or for the first quarter or what have you.
Since we are a sales website I'd expect a lot more sales-oriented items than normal but we won't be shoe-horning it into everything where it isn't appropriate.  Anyway if you're at all interested in helping out with this site and digging a little deeper into the gaming industry then you might normally see day to day then shoot me an email!

How much is too much? Would you want us to post anything Kotaku posts, for example? I would be interested, but, IMO, there are too many news to keep track of. For news, I go to Joystiq/IGN/GP/1up/GS/Slashdot, etc. Many many news to report on.

lol, tempting but PSU pays me to write =] but good luck.

I would like, I have a lot of free time this days, very few classes in college. I live in South America though. Own only a Wii right now, planning to get a 360 in future.

I'd love to help, but I'm not sure what out of the above list I'd be able to do, other than reporting on press-releases... not much industry over her in Israel, and traveling abroad only happens once a year when I visit home.

Although I have an idea for this Summer... Erm, I'll send the rest in an email.

I don't want it to be just reposting stuff that appears on other news sites, and quite frankly Kotaku posts a lot of crap that no one cares about. :P We don't want to lose our good solid stories and exclusives in a mass of spam. Ideally we'd like 3-4 news items posted each day, but sometimes it's just a slow news week like the past couple weeks. :P

I don't want to just quote other site's exclusive stories, that kind of thing can stay in the forums. I'd rather make our own exclusive articles and in between write up anything based on direct sources (press releases, sometimes magazine scans, what-have-you).

Location is not an issue since most of the work right now takes place online via e-mail and such. The only reason I mentioned it, is because if you're close to those sites we'd probably be able to get you into media events. :)

Even if all you want to do is write up press releases I could use the help at times if you're reasonably available to spend 15 or so minutes writing something up quick. With press releases it's nice to get it up as quick as possible to try and beat out the other gaming sites and I don't always have time myself when I dig up 3-4 of them at once.

I've gotten two interviews already and more will be coming shortly, once we get our name out in the industry more we'll get access to more information more quickly as well. Oh and it'd help if everyone actually read the exclusive news pieces and offered (positive :P) comments on them. ;)

As I have stated before, I'm interested in helping (as long as it doesn't place too much time pressure on myself).

I have written press releases in the past (current & previous company), and generally do a lot of writing these days.

I'd be interested in writing general analysis, game reviews, technical articles (i.e. hardware breakdown), commentary on the mobile industry (fairly close to it at the moment), and maybe other things as well.

EDIT - was flat out last weekend, but this weekend I will put together a full analysis of the "Top 5 game voting" data that we have on this site, and send it in - might make for a nice article.

shams - please send an e-mail so we can get you on the list and set-up with other stuff. ;)

Well, I normally read the news except when it is a fact sheet.
If you plan on going on with the game reviews, I would love to be part of that.

Nah thanks I stick with reading. Haha from Holland anyway so no use then :P
