Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Wii and the third-party "doom"

A curious thought has come to me recently. I wonder, In the history of the video game market after the crash of '84 how influental has Third Party support been? I know it was a big ticket for the Playstation given the lack of 1st party titles but still. Majority of the big sellers and console pushers have been SEGA, Nintendo, SCEA, Neo*Geo, and Microsoft. Halo is obviously the biggest followed by Fable. Gran Turismo is Sony. I don't need to recite the Nintendo and SEGA lists which essentially outsold all other titles at least 10 to 1. Only has there been famous titles and franchises that have shined thru every now and again. Tecmo Super Bowl, (shutter) the Madden (shutter) crap for crap series, Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, Metal Gear, Ninja Gaiden and about a dozen or so million seller solids. The point I'm getting at is of the 876 liscenced US release NES titles only about 46 of them or so were any good. I think historically about 90% of all third party games are and always have been budget belt crap. I would like to see this change now of course.

I wonder how the industry would be like without MS's/Sony's payments to third parties. Would they be able to develop the games they're developing, and survive?

A lot of companies making HD games are subsidized by those companies' pockets, of that I'm sure.

Yeah right. Those out of pocket purchases account for a minority of the 3rd party support, that the 360/PS3 receive.Third party developers choose the PS3/360 as their platforms of choice because it's the ideal platforms for their games and audience. Not knocking the wii,but a majority of the third party support will continue to go to the 360/PS3 regardless of how well the wii does.imo

I agree with this entirely.

Are either of you willing to take a bet about this?  Say, use of Avatar/sig for a while, or something else?

Terms of bet if either of you are willing:

I say that the # of Third Party Wii games announced at E3 will be greater than PS3/360 combined (PS3/360 multiplats only get counted once, not twice) (any games that come to Wii in addition to one or both of the PS3/360 games can either not be added to any, or be added to both; it is a net null gain).  If either of you two are willing to take that bet, then please tell me what you would like to bet.

Who doesn't expect a lot of casual crap to be announced for the Wii?  If Ubisoft announced 13 games for the Wii and all except two are budget crap and has 7 games for the 360/PS3 but they're all quality games does that mean the Wii has won with that company when it comes to third party support?  That is what blue-ocelot is talking about when he mentions the majority of third party support .  For those who claim that quality is subjective, I agree. but it's pretty obvious what we're talking about when it comes to quality and ridiculous to pretend that it's difficult to tell the difference.

Here is the list of video games announced at e3 2007

I can't find a comprehensive list from 2006, but Wiki has a decent list

E3 is NOT a shovelware announcement platform.  It selects, for the most part, against shovelware due to the cost of holding a booth there, etc.  It's not worth it to advertise shovelware, because it cost-prohibitively selects against the games that don't sell based on hype.

For every Cruis'n Wii announced at e3, there is also a Lair or Blacksite: Area 51.

Don't you get it?  The bet ALREADY eliminates most of the crap that will be released on Wii by virtue of it being E3.

For someone to not want to take the bet means that they aren't sure that the PS3/360 core games will outnumber the Wii's; and you know what?  That's fine by me, but pretending that this bet is in any way unfair to the PS3/360 because of shovelware is simply wrong.

@ Commano
When you seek only sales, and really no care for product quality... Yeah

 Wii: 80-85 Million end of 2009 (1.1.09)

yes indeed I was referring only to sales. It would be nice if more quality titles got the sales they deserved.

You'd be right if that 2007 list didn't consist of shovelware.

Like I said,

"For every Cruis'n Wii announced at e3, there is also a Lair or Blacksite: Area 51."

It isn't cost effective for the what most people talk about with 'shovelware' on wii; the shovelware announced at E3 is the same shovelware that exists on all consoles; games that just aren't much fun, or don't have a big enough budget, or are licensed; it's equal-opportunity shovelware.  You aren't going to see Conspiracy Entertainment there, for example.  If you have a more fair metric, I am willing to use that instead, as I said above.

Since I haven't heard one that doesn't rely on the past yet (which is silly when talking about future support), I can only assume that noone out there is confident enough in their theories about the Wii's future third-party support to put their money where their mouth is.

As they say; put up or shut up.  Some of us are tired of hearing about the third party 'doom' when there are more good games on the horizon than at any time in the past, and more creativity is going into Wii titles than has been present in the industry in a long time; even EA is starting to revolutionize their Wii games.  If you really agree with bleu-ocelot that

a majority of the third party support will continue to go to the 360/PS3 regardless of how well the wii does.imo

then right here, right now, let's make the bet.  If not, then stop stating it as a fact and saying that the support is lacking every chance you get.  It's getting annoying.

PS360 fanboys fear the shovelware. You guys better be careful I hear it's contagious.

Do you know how to find gold? Dig in the dirt.

Or you can panhandle in a river (for gold). Thats usually more effective.
