Poor PS3 Sales Means Smaller Losses

"Actually, because the number of units sold was not as high as we hoped, the loss was better than our original expectation," Quotes from Sony’s CFO Nobuyuki Oneda.

PC sales are practically impossible to track, given how large a percentage of the market is made up of untracked, digital distribution retailers such as Steam.

NPD's numbers are probably quite low.

I still think NPD should release PC sales figures- as long as it's made clear that they're just boxed retail, then I don't see any harm in doing so. Could VGChartz do the same as well? If they're collecting figures from a sample of various outlets that also sell PC games, it would be pretty trivial to also quote them along with the console numbers.

BTW, does anybody have an idea of the sort of sales that Steam generates? It apparently has over 15 million users, but Valve have never released any figures. Doug Lombardi stated recently that total revenues from Steam over the last 4 years or so would soon surpass combined retail revenues from Valve's games, so it must be a healthy amount. Would anyone care to hazard a guess as to what the likes of COD4, Bioshock, Audiosurf and the like have sold through Steam?

I feel that trying to get PC numbers -- which we know would not be a complete package -- could detract from the primary goal of this website -- to get good sales numbers on consoles/handhelds and the software for those types of machines.

Also, if numbers were posted that are known to be incomplete, it could call into question (by association) all of the other data on the website.

Just my two cents.

I am Mario.

I like to jump around, and would lead a fairly serene and aimless existence if it weren't for my friends always getting into trouble. I love to help out, even when it puts me at risk. I seem to make friends with people who just can't stay out of trouble.

Agreed. PC sales are too difficult to track in any capacity.

Can't they just make them up like they do with the consoles?

I'm afraid you have it wrong. Ioi is a violent sociopath who steals numbers. Be warned, he's not to be approached as he is possibly armed and dangerous.
