Forums - Sony - Sony's Next (Wii-type) Controller?

I agree with shams.

This is full of fail. It doesn't look easy to use or comfortable, and it won't be supported by anyone really. Maybe a couple token 1st/2nd party games, but, not by 3rd parties.

Nice initial idea for the PS4, but, it should definitely go back to the R&D department and be pushed off until 2011/12.

I really hope MS and Sony don't announce wiimote/nunchuk ripoffs at this point. It really won't help them. They should focus on adding something in their next systems, but, now will just fail.

To be honest, in my opinion that kind of motion/location sensing controller would be purely a gimmick. Those two halves aren't probably going to be comfortable to hold on on their own, so the only use for them would be certain short actions, just like throwing a grenade after which you plug them back together. For that, why bother? If you're gonna make a motion sensing controller, you have to make it a central idea of the controller else it'll fail to rise above a simple gimmick. Design works best around a single or perhaps, on some occasions, two central concepts. Anything more is really, really, really hard to implement in a way that would add rather than detract from the overall functionality.

Oh no, what will PS3 owners do? The PS3 has turned casual, waggle controls, gimmick, fad!!

Oh but wait, that only applies to Nintendo, so if Sony does it, it means it's Jesus itself right?

What will they come up with next?!

A bad idea is only bad when it's not properly implemented and/or not used in the right context. This is not the right context for a break-apart control device, and its implementation is critically flawed (as has been outlined already). I'm not even sure what would be the right context, but this isn't it.

I'm seriously starting to wonder if any PS3 supporters actually said this kind of stuff or if you guys just make this sh*t up out of thin air -_-; Many of the people in this thread saying it's a good idea haven't said a word about the Wii's motion control. Stop being a tool.

I think this is a good direction for they're entry point into motion control, I wouldn't mind this at all, and I'm sure if they added a certain amount of weight in different parts of each controller side it would be more than comfortable to hold. Besides it's not like they've released it, we have no idea (well maybe some idea ^_~ ) of what the final product would end up looking like. I will semi-agree and semi-disagree with superchunk, I think they SHOULD release this, so they get a feel for the technology, so it could be PERFECTED in the PS4.

While his negativity was out of line, there is just as much to be said about blind optimism.

True, this could be a good thing, but there is plenty of room for worry in how this feature will be implemented. When Six-Axis was announced it seemed like a potentially novel feature as well (albeit not as interesting as this). If you're going to use a member's comments to rail against the genral mentality of a group in a thread then perhaps you should try your luck with someone a little more credible than the flamming mal-content.

Not to belittle your opinion either, but for you to actually believe that there will be a PS4 any time in the next decade (or soon enough to feature this controller as a new feature) shows a slight misunderstanding of the direction the market is currently moving which may account for why you believe so confidently that this controller is a surefire bet.
