The PS1 and PS2 had crappy hardware...
my 2 PS1s and 4 PS2's attest to that now doesn't it?

The PS1 and 2 had almost no competition in itś market. The Dreamcast perished quickly and Nintendo had itś own userbase. The 360 is in a market with direct competition from the PS3 and in direct competition from the Wii, which both regardless off earlier failures on the market have their affairs in order. Besides stiff competition from Nintendo and Sony, the 360 also faces direct competiton from the PC. Most 360 games are being released on that platform and some of those even contain more levels and superiour graphics, free online play also helps the PC. Now one might argue that MS wins by attracting gamers to Windows on PC, but they simply don get any money for live or get the additional profit made on every console title. They don't get more money if their OS is used for gaming or as a basic OS, the moneyś the exact same.
The 360 however takes a very big role in protecting Windows as a standard platform. As most of you know, releasing the 360 earlier then expected forced Sony to speed up their process aswell and release their console a year earlier then expected. This forced Sony (according to rumours) to drop Linux on their PS3 as a pre installed OS. If!!! Sony released the PS3 with Linux already on it (simply in your xmb), you can be sure that many people would have had their Linux set up in a manner that they could receive mail and browse on it by now. Linux vs Windows battles would have been blooming everywhere too. With appliances like open office they would have been able to type any letter or do basicly anything they wanted to do and that would have been a huge blow to MS. If you really want to have something that the 360 did extremely well, then it must be protecting the core interest of MS.
