Forums - Sales Discussion - Interesting trend after PS3

Even though PS3 is doing dismally right now worldwide, I couldnt help noticing an interesting trend for Xbox360 after the European PS3 launch. Before that, Xbox360 was selling 110-120 K a week, but after that, it sells about 70-90 K a week, a considerable drop.

Before the launch, Xbox360 was selling 60-70 K in America, 40-50 K in Europe and 5-10 K in Japan. After the launch, it is selling 50-60 K in America, 20-30 K in Europe, and below 5 K in Japan, which is actually good news for Sony, though they are in a pretty bad shape.

As we see, Xbox sales got a big blow in Continental Europe (excluding the UK) and Xbox360 is not doing so good right now. Who buys Xbox360 in Europe? The Majority are those who actually want to buy PS3 but cant afford or doesnt want it cos of some annoying reason but still want the same type of games (like cutting edge graphics etc.) Its a different story in the UK and the USA though.

As I said before PS3 can beat Xbox360 in Europe after a year or 2 but, global domination over Xbox360 doesnt seem likely due to the American Market and the WII factor :) Sony will finish in the worst position no matter who finally wins (cos of the huge losses they incur right now while others are actually making profits) and the only gain could be getting a Bluray player into millions of homes and affecting the bluray-hddvd war in favor of bluray.

Yes thats it the PS3 is destoying the competition. What else did you expect with such cutting edge graphics.

Oh well, if the PS3 is that great we will all be here to watch how it sells those 11 million consoles.

Interesting post.

What you say about PS3's effect in the 360's sales in Europe makes sense and might be true, but I suspect that it won't be the case forever. When the next few waves of games for both consoles come, and if people see that the 360 is as strong or stronger than the PS3 in terms of games, the strength of the Playstation brand might start slowly fading, and people will just buy the lower-priced 360. This is doubly true if the 360 gets a price cut this year or early in 2008...

36o is selling like 2500 a week in Japan, also I think the American drop has more to do with the lack of new system selling games. In Europe I think PS3 will effect 360 sales.

Thanks to Blacksaber for the sig!

I would have been surprised if the sales hadn't gone down considering it's spring/summer, and with the launch of both Wii and PS3.

It would be interesting if each console had considerable market share at different points of the globe at the end of this generation.
Example
Wii - Dominates Japan
360- Dominates US
PS3 - Dominates Europe
I think it would be a good thing if all 3 found a place that they could thrive in.

Speaking of merely Europe, I'd expect anything could happen including what you say. But lets just not forget that the playstation/sony brand in Europe is far stronger than Xbox, which does affect the competition.

My humble opinion is if ps3 can be priced below $400 in a year, it will surpass Xbox360 but I dont think this will ever happen cos of the huge extra costs to sony.

I'm not sure we're looking at the same data.  The charts I'm seeing don't support your theory:

Other Regions weekly sales

America weekly sales

These both show essentially the same level of sales for Xbox 360 before and after the PS3 launch.  Am I missing something?

But you are skipping one point, Wii is in the process of dominating everywhere. So Wii may be competing with Xbox360 in America and dominating Europe.... who knows?

By the way, here is the monthly data according to VG Chartz, just divide by 4 to get weekly data :D

@freedquaker
I didnt skip any points. I wasnt predicting that or anything. Just said it would be interesting. Honestly I think the Wii is eventually going to lead in all markets. I think it would be healthier for competition though if they all supplied to different types of markets, possible each focusing on different elements of games. Much more variety for consumers might come out of that.
