Forums - Microsoft Discussion - 360 died (drive failure)

Well, No RROD, but when I was trying to load the game, the drive started making awful noises and the game wouldn't load (Ninja Gaiden 2 & Lost Odyssey).  I'm going to call in a couple hours and get the coffin and everything.  Luckily, I'm barely under the 1 year mark because only RROD is covered after 1 year.

A question - do the Falcon models have a better DVD drive?  Are the current models out in stores all falcon models.  I'm thinking I will just sell the refurb I get from MS when I get it back so I can have the Falcon.

MS is getting a ton of good games, but their h/w reliability is like an American car versus a Japanese car.

"Naturally the common people don't want war: Neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, IT IS THE LEADERS of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is TELL THEM THEY ARE BEING ATTACKED, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. IT WORKS THE SAME IN ANY COUNTRY."  --Hermann Goering, leading Nazi party member, at the Nuremberg War Crime Trials

Did you try turning the 360 upside down? j/k

That sucks, but be happy that it happened before the warranty ended.

I thought the warantees lasted for 3 years?

For RROD specifically, it lasts 3 years. Everything else (like what I had) lasts one year.

Only for RROD. Other failures have the normal warranty. However, In the EU many countries mandate 2 years of warranty.

You /can/ fix this if you don't mind getting your hands dirty and are fairly good with a screwdriver.

You need to buy (from ebay) a working drive of the same model, then swap the logic boards. Its fairly easy to do and this ~$50 + 2 hours labour fix will save you having to buy a new one.

Obviously this invalidates the 3y warranty with rrod as well.

(Doesn't apply to you obviously, but for anyone outside of the year)

I would do that procedure if I was out of warranty. Did it with the PS2.

LOL, did you pick it up and shake it while it was running?

Umm... no.  I actually treat my electronics like gold.

As great as the game line-up is for the 360 (SO4 confirms this fact), M$ did not use high quality components for their console.

^ no shit.

Maybe if they had taken the time to ensure their console didnt overheat all the time, they would be number 1!

I hope my 360 doesn't RRoD
