I always thought it was because the 360 was meant to be a hub of your living room. Bringing gaming, music, movies, internet, and multimedia capabilities to your home. PR speak yeah but that's what I seem to remember being the underlying theme when the box was announced.

There is still an article on IGN about the 360 launch which confirms Peter Moore echoing a very similar statement.

They wanted a "3" in the title to fight the Playstation 3. And 360 degrees is a "Revolution".

its called an xbox 360 because there is a subliminal message hidden in the name.
Play more than 360 minutes straight, and you RROD.
Play more than 36.0 hours total, and you RROD.

Simple.

i call mine the "SexBox 360".

 Atleast there are games to play on the console that can may you play more than 36.0 hrs unlike another console.

i guess but every console has a game i would want to play for 36.0 hours total.
SSBB for the Wii. Fable 2, and Too Human (when they're released) for the 360. I've played both resistance:fall of man, and motorstorm for the ps3 for more than 36 hours total.
for the DS, maybe Advance Wars, or something similar. And maybe some RPG for the PSP

seriously though, from what i've read its called the xbox 360 for a few reasons.
the X in Xbox, stands for DirectX.
the 360 is just to make it sound more appealing, and i have to admit, the xbox 360's name has a good sound to it, better than the other two current gen consoles
