Forums - Sales Discussion - Who cares who sells the most? It's PROFIT that matters.

The profit matters to the COMPANIES. You think gamers care whether the company is making money or not? No, they care about the games they are getting. Generally who "won" the console war is based on which one moved the most consoles and games...because that means a majority of gamers wanted that console for it's games. Whether the company can continue with another console is irrelevant to that generation.

Face it, as much as some people would have liked Nintendo or Microsoft to have won, the PS2 won that one for the gamers. Profit-wise, Nintendo is a winner, this is true...but what does that have to do with what GAMERS want? GAMES matter to GAMERS. PROFT matters to COMPANIES.

Tell that to the Investors when they don´t want to play in the games market anymore.

@ChronotriggerJM  My house and most houses I know are filled with DVD players so I honestly couldn´t care less if my Nintendo system played DVD´s as long as it play games, sure if it did I wouldn´t cry about it but it doesn´t add or take away anything from the system for me and most people I know. It´s mostly the generation that grew up with PS (and now MS gamers) that cares and most of the time it seems like an achievement used to boost how good your system is by fan of respective system but in reality it doesn´t add to the gaming experience in generall. Today with PS and Xbox it´s a different thing since they market their system as being more then gaming systems so they need to have it but most gamers don´t care about that because they bought the system to play games and DVD functionality is a + but not a requirement.

Oh, no, profit is important. I was just saying gamers care more about the games on their console over the profit the companies make. Profit is good for the gaming industry to stay alive and for the companies to continue. I'm just saying that in the view of the gamers, the PS2 won over the GC and Xbox. Nothing can change that. People can wave profit in others faces to have a small victory...but the PS2 moved the most and was the gamers choice last gen. Nothing can change that.

@Vaio, I could understand not caring if you've already got a ton of dvd players, I however definitely do not :P We have one gorgeous TV, and all of our Playstations have been backwards compatible, so theres no real reason to have the older consoles sitting around. It makes everything hundreds of times more simplistic, I don't have a jungle of wires behind my tv, I don't have to constantly switch tv and receiver inputs, I get to free up a ton of room on my electrical sockets. I mean seriously as petty as it sounds, the Wii not playing DVD's is almost a deal breaker, I demand simplicity in my entertainment experience and having clutter just royally bothers me. Plus in the PS3's case, not only does it play DVD's, but it up-scales them amazingly. I have 0 reason to keep crap around that I'm not going to use :/

@Rollstopable, which is exactly why I want Nintendo to reach out and touch some of these guys :D I want Nintendo to publish a fuck-ton of titles on the Wii, get some real hands on with some other developers and put an end to this nonsense XD It's like everyone embraces the fact that Nintendo games are the dominate form of quality on the Wii and everything else is seemingly garbage by compare. I want them to embrace some third party devs and pull them through this. I don't like Nintendo being the only "quality" company on the Wii.

While I get what you're saying, and while I'd love to see the same result that you do, I don't think it's up to Nintendo to babysit these developers and walk them through how to make a good game. Third-parties are (theoretically) big-boys: they should be able to handle themselves.

Nintendo's already "done its part" by showing developers how to use the controls to implement controls for sports (Wii Sports), for traditional games (Galaxy, Zelda, etc.), for shooters (Metroid), and many more. Whether other companies run with this is entirely up to those companies. Pro Evolution Soccer, Trauma Center, Zak and Wiki, and other titles say that some developers "get it": much of Ubisoft's (announced) line-up says they don't. But I hardly think Nintendo should be a Big Brother and walk third-parties through the process.

Even if it does guarantee a**-kicking results.

That´s great that it makes your life easier but the majoroty of gamers don´t care about thoose features but I understand your situation and why it would be a deal breaker. For me I went for a long time and was annoyed that I couldn´t play my old games on my new Nintendo system and were very Impressed by Sony(yes i said impressed and Sony in the same sentece, even if I hate Sony the company not PS I still have to give them credit for the good things they have done) when they made the PS 2 and Included BC and was hoping that Nintendo was taking notes about that and when they went with discs I was thinking that if they are not BC after GC it would be a dealbreaker for me. We all have something that counts more to us but again in this case the majority of gamers don´t care about BC while for me it´s become one of the most important features of a great console.

@Noname, yeah I don't think they need to be babied entirely, but I'm in that poor spot, I like the Wii concept, but I don't like Nintendo games, so I'm slightly SOL for the Wii :/ I just think Ninty needs to publish some big hitters and get some better engines running on some 3rd parties. I need the 3rd party devs, and I think Nintendo is ignoring people like me lol.

[edit] And as much as I want to say the 3rd party publishers should be "big boys", the bitter truth is that right now, they really aren't, and Nintendo doesn't seem to mind :/

I agree with you on that and I have been waiting and still do for Nintendo to make more of the so called mature games and I think they should create or buy a game company that solely makes theese kinds of games for their systems but that doesn´t take away the greatness they create in the rest of their library wich I still like thankfully.

Yeah, I guess that would leave you further up the creek than most of us, huh? Sorry about that. For what it's worth, everything I've seen so far tells me that this winter will mark the vanguard of third-party efforts on the system, although I don't expect the real deluge to begin until late next year at the earliest, development schedules being what they are.

I don't say this too often, but perhaps you should sell your Wii right now (as you can currently realize a profit off it), and then re-purchase one later, when the price has dropped and there are more games to your liking on it. I really don't think you can count on Nintendo itself to improve your situation: they do things their way, and kind of ignore the rest of the industry (and their own fans, for that matter). That often leads to awesome results, but there are many times when it can be exasperating as well. Sorry to hear that they've put you in that position, though.
