You were lucky then. From what I can say they send the messages in waves so they don't get everyone downloading the update in the same time.

Most people get the updates several days after they are released.

Usually there is a buzz about an update .. not just a hunch.
I imagine we will see it during Reggie's E3 talk .. just imagine 30M Wiis going blue at the same time.
