It just means that when you upgrade next you're going to dump your motherboard/CPU/Ram because they all won't be compatible if you pick an intel platform at present. You just have to consider you usage patterns and how much you upgrade.

How will you use your PC? - Games/Rendering/Programming/Encoding

Do you value silence?

Are you going to SLI/Xfire?

Do you need abosolute high performance?

Edit: do you overclock?


haha, I knew what you meant by dead path, I just don't know why you think it is. Doesn't AMD change there socket every 15 minutes or so? I find it hard to trust them to keep anything standard for a while. (I have an AMD CPU right now, and have that issue).

Also you said AM3 AMD cpus, but newegg seems to call there sockets AM2+. is that the same thing?

I don't over clock (never saw any real world advantages when I did), and I just want the best performance for the money. Not the best performance.

I don't think will do SLI, and I don't value silence (most of the time I am playing games I have headphones on anyway, as my GF is trying to sleep upstairs).


I read somewhere that AM3 (future) will be compatible with AM2+ so you're good to go. Manufacturers are usually pretty honest about road maps. They were quick with their 7xx then 939 then 940 then am2, but they seem to have learnt their lessons. I posted something here about it with a link, but its too late to go search for it.

If you don't want to overclock and want a solid system you can upgrade in the future I say pick the Phenom because its dirt cheap and $100-150 less than a comparible intel because the motherboard is free. It has only one PCI-E 2 -16 port but thats all you need and you have an upgrade path should you want it.

My laptop just got this weird blue scree and restarted itself several times over. When turning it back on, it asks me to return to last known setting or go into safe mode then try again. But when I do that, I just get the restarting blue screen again.

Can anyone PM me some help/advice?

 I am always online with my Mac Book Pro. I just use my PC for games and when I have to work from home. (I am a .Net developer).

Ok, the motherboard isn't an AMD motherboard - You can get cheaper good ram as above and save $50 and the PSU doesn't have an 8 pin plug so no ultra high end card like an AMD X2 or a GTX 280 or maybe 260 (not sure)

Oh yea, one more question (sorry for all the posts). Does 64 bit Vista limit what software you can run in any way?
