You only use 'an' when the word after it begins with a vowel or a vowel sound (like honour). The thread title should read, "I just got a HDTV". Sorry to single you out, but I have seen the same mistake so many times on this forum and it annoys the hell out of me.

OT: Sorry I don't know anything about TV's :P

Are you sure about that? I was always taught to use "an" phonetically. That's why people say "a university" because it's pronounced "You-niversity". The same applies to acronyms like "an HDTV" because it's pronounced "ayche-DTV".

I Googled it and there is no clear answer I could find. I'm just curious.

It is definitely "an" HDTV.

According to my English Comp 1 book, it can be either or. An university, a university are the same thing.

Unfortunately, SSJ12...University is not the word that is in question.  Read the whole thread.

I was using university as an example like RP.....

It works in every situation, a HDTV, an HDTV, a toaster oven, an toaster oven, etc.

SSJ12...I am continually amazed by you.  It is like standing next to a color blind person and looking at a blue sky and them telling you emphatically that it is pink.  And the worst part....they think you are stupid.

Here's another SSJ12...

And don't tell me anything about the date of your textbook....it's not like these things change that quickly. And I do hope Purdue is a respected enough authority on the matter.

It's 'a'.

It's not 'an'.

'An' is if the next word starts with a vowel.

'A' is if it isn't.

Have you ever thought of using the internet?  It's an amazing tool that you can use to find information about things you don't know.

From Wikipedia:

Purdue University, located in West Lafayette, Indiana, U.S., is the flagship university of the six campuses within the Purdue University System, one of the largest university systems in the United States. Purdue University has a long established reputation as one of America's top engineering universities, with an especially impressive record in aeronautical and astronautical engineering achievements. Purdue engineering alumni play leadership roles in many aerospace engineering organizations. [1]

And the lesson of this thread for you SSJ12, is that just because you don't know it...or know about it....doesn't mean it's not true.

I'm still waiting for your humble admittance that you were wrong....especially about "an toaster oven" LMAO.
