Forums - Nintendo - Ubisoft responds to Wii-owners upset with quality of titles

Around the Network

Personally, I have no desire to "boycott" Ubisoft because I have a feeling that this will work itself out; if Ubisoft's strategy for the Wii is correct they will have no problems ...

I expect that when companies like Ubisoft decide not to produce high quality conventional games for the Wii it reduces the competition for those publishers who are producing high quality conventional games for the Wii and thus boosts their sales. Games like High Voltage's The Conduit (or Platnium Games' Mad World) with decent marketing could become multi-million sellers even if they're only average (or above average) games because they're the only game in town; if these games end up being really popular it could force publishers like Ubisoft to see that there is an opportunity here, (unfortunately) Ubisoft would be at a disadvantage in this market because they would lack a decent IP, don't have an experienced (quality) Wii development team, and have hurt their image with the core Wii gamer.

Isn't it ironic that Ubisoft is selling far more THIS generation than the last!.

12 million Xbox360

2.7 million PS3

HD total: 14.7 MILLION+

Wii total: Under 5 million.

In any case WHAT THE HELL ARE PEOPLE COMPLAINING ABOUT?!?!?!

I mentioned IMO quite rightly that Developers are currently experimenting with games and ideas on the Wii using cheap/throwaway games. When they start finding games that work you will see bigger budget titles on the same theme. They are just being conservative at present, give them a break. If you want to complain why don't you spend YOUR money on a developer and ask them to make a game for you. He who takes the risks gets to make the choices.

Tease.

Ubisoft is another incompetant developer who thinks the Wii is a rubix cube to develop for.

Though in all honesty, this is just their way of getting around saying that they really don't want to put serious support into the Wii and are banking on HD gaming.

No, its the fact they make more money on PS3/360/PC then anything else. They only support the Wii to make people happy they look like they are attempting to care.

That's exactly what I said. What's your point?

I still say this is more representative of the cycle they're trapped in:

  1. Throw (mostly) very poor support behind the Wii while focusing the bulk of your support behind the PS3, XBox 360 and PC
  2. This results in very low quality games for the Wii and very high quality games for the PS3, XBox 360 and PC.
  3. All games sell very well for their budget and quality level, the revenues for the XBox 360, PS3 and PC games are much higher although the return on investment of Wii games is much better.
  4. Focus on producing cheap and dirty Wii games in order to minimize the risk associated with producing the high budget XBox 360, PS3 and PC games
  5. The return on investment of Wii games remains decent (but has dropped because fewer people are looking to buy 'shitty' games) while the revenues for PS3, XBox 360 and PC games remains high
  6. Use point 5 to justify decision 4 and continue

This strategy also has a risk they don't really realize at this point though:

  1. As they continue to produce 'shitty' Wii games their return on investment from the Wii will eliminate its ability to balance out the high development costs of HD games
  2. The slow growth of HD console sales (and limited sales potential due to high price) limits the number of games that can see high sales.
  3. They release a couple of lower quality although high development cost games (like Haze, but potentially worse) for the HD consoles in a time of high competition (like Christmas) and see these games lose a lot of money.
  4. Their losses cause them to scale back on their development and marketing budgets, which results in lower quality HD games that are marketed worse.
  5. Their lower quality games with worse marketing end up selling worse and often fail to break even
  6. Use point 4 to cause point 5 and continue

Now, many people would say that this scenerio is unlikely but it is very similar to the cycle that Sega has been (and continues to be) caught in.

The whole statement makes me sick... It just disgusts me how little they care about what they make.

EDIT: WOW... They've already deployed the damage control drones? WOW... Just WOW.

You have to remember as time passes and their knowledge of the HD Consoles grow development costs go down. The same can partially be said about Wii titles. Future "shitty" titles will be better looking then previous "shitty" titles and might even have improved gameplay due to increased knowledge. Also development costs will drop a touch for Wii titles.

PC is a different story as the coding has basically been the same for ages and all they have to do is make graphics prettier 99% of the time.
