Forums - Nintendo - Ubisoft responds to Wii-owners upset with quality of titles

Wow, viral marketers already? Sign me up for this war.

I'm not buying any Ubisoft games until this shit is cleared up. Not for the Wii, not for the 360, not for PC and not for the PS3 but that's because I don't have one :P

Alright.

Ubisoft is lucky that they don't let that many people into E3 anymore. Because if they let Wii owners go up into that place, anything they presented for the Wii would've either been abandoned or booed heavily, assuming its that Dogz and Catz stuff. Only a Red Steel 2 announcement would've saved them from total disaster.

Playing a game with my butt? What the heck do I look like? I like using my hands thank you very much.

Viral marketers, pathetic.

That first post you quoted is really well written. I really feel for the guy. The difference now compared the Gamecube days is that back then porting a game from the PS2 or Xbox over to the GC was pretty easy as they were all pretty comparable systems. Now the Wii is so vastly different from the 360 and PS3 that it's forced companies like Ubisoft to make a decision: either develop for th PS360 OR the Wii. Back then basically one team could make all three multi-platform games. Now, to make a game for all three systems, you would have to have two separate teams and that means quite a bit extra cost.

Then how do some smaller devlopers do it? Sega does it and they have been losing alot since the failure of the dreamcast, platinum games does it and they are basically new, but are funded by sega, capcom does it, they are about the same size as ubisoft. I could name alot more. NOt every game has to be multiplatform.

It's not that Ubisoft CAN'T make quality games for all systems. They have the ability. However, they don't believe in taking the risk of developing quality high budget games for all systems.

Sega, on the other hand, is more willing to take on the risk. This probably has to do with the fact that they have more experience catering to a casual or more mainstream crowd (even if they aren't very good at). The take away message is that not all companies act in the same way. Some are more daring and some are more conservative.

My Top 5:

Shadow of the Colossus, Metal Gear Solid 3, Shenmue, Skies of Arcadia, Chrono Trigger

My 2 nex-gen systems: PS3 and Wii

Prediction Aug '08: We see the PSP2 released fall '09. Graphically, it's basically the same as the current system. UMD drive ditched and replaced by 4-8gb on board flash memory. Other upgrades: 2nd analog nub, touchscreen, blutooth, motion sensor. Design: Flip-style or slider. Size: Think Iphone. Cost: $199. Will be profitable on day 1.

I just want to clarify why I'm feeling so dumbfounded. I just don't understand why I'm seeing this mentality on the internet that Ubisoft somehow owes it to the Wii to make quality games. When Red Steel sells a million, and the Rayman Raving Rabbids series sells 2.5 million and when the Petz series sells 500,000, what incentive does Ubisoft have to improve their quality on the Wii?

The president of the company had previously PROMISED QUALITY games on the Wii. Did you not notice that?

Any why should the 360 and PS3 get all the quality games from Ubisoft? Do they magically deserve them better?

That commet is nothing but ignorance and bullshit.

No they don't magically deserve them. However, Ubisoft as a corporation deserves, by law, to release whatever games they want on whatever systems they want. They don't owe any system anything. They owe it to themselves to make profit in whatever legal fashion they see fit. And guess what: Ubi's games on the PS3 and 360 sell like gangbusters. Someone's spewing out ignorance and bullshit, but it's not me. And no one has actually answered "what incentive does Ubisoft have to improve their quality on the Wii?"

Guillemot's comments about quality turned out to be pretty bullshit, I'll give you that. But PROMISES mean nothing in business unless they're contractual. A corporate figure head is always gonna speak positively about his company. Learn to take what they say with a grain of salt.

They have a clear incentive, they just don't seem to understand that. Because the image of the company is dependent on th equality of their games. If they keep on delivering non-products their reputation as a quality software maker will go down the drain. Seeing the reactions on the internet and their own forums makes me think their reputation already took a major blow.

I do't know what business you're in, but in my world integrity is a very important part of doing business. Again the reputation of the company is related to that. A CEO that lies is absolutely unacceptable and will affect the company.

I think you're absolutely right. However, when Ubisoft was in their corporate meetings make decisions, I don't think anyone expected this kind of reaction toward Shaun White Snowboarding and Imagine: BabyZ. Personally, I would've assumed it would be a non-story, but here we are today. Even with this hit on their reputation, I'm not sure they have enough incentive to develop a great game for the Wii. Think about it, at this point, if they were to try to make something good, and it only turned out to be a 7.5 rated game, there's a very good chance that Wii owners would call to arms once again for Ubisoft dumping shovelware on the Wii again.

Oh, and I love how I was suspected of being a Ubisoft shill. Stop making conspiracy theories people! Ubisoft doesn't hate the Wii, and I don't work for Ubisoft. The only Ubisoft games I can think of that I own are Rainbow Six Vegas and Beyond Good and Evil. Both of which I thought were mediocre. Yeah, I just called the underground hit, BG&E, mediocre. Personally, I'm more of Japanese fan. I'm especially a sucker for JRPGs.
