Forums - Gaming - Screw a FF VII remake! Why not a sequel?

I own the not so great PC version of FFVII so a remake would probably be the only way I'm going to play through it again.

What's wrong with the PC version?

only one guy you say? so know all of a sudden you remember things well again lol.. come on dude, it's really your own fault you missed those shops.. I mean.. come on.. Square even gave you that 'select-button' option for If couldn't figure it out :P

No. God no. A sequel would have been a bad idea even for the all-star team that made the original back in its prime in 1997. Today it would destroy the earth itself with its god-awfulness.

FFVII's story was self-contained and complete. It was written without any sequels or prequels in mind. None of the "compilation" entries have contributed anything worthwhile or meaningful to it, and if you haven't noticed, their plots have all been horrible monstrosities (that's not to say they didn't have other charms). I absolutely hate, hate, hate this milking of franchises, this sending the characters on new wacky adventures each week like some bastardized Saturday morning Disney spinoff.

Frankly, I don't trust Square anymore even with a remake. I don't think they have any idea anymore what made it great, and they're swinging blindly in the dark. They're bound to screw it up, and asking them to toss together an original story could only be a thousand times worse.

You misunderstand.  I replayed the game 2 years ago.  The first playthrough where I didn't know exactly where to go/what to do was the one that was almost a decade ago.  2 years is a much shorter timespan.  Today, I could play through some of the areas (especially the beginning ones) almost with my eyes closed, but that very first time was very different from all the rest.

I agree with Borkachev, when a story has been told, it has been told.. same counts for Xenogears (porbably even more) but you still sometimes hear guys saying they would want a sequel to Xenogears.. they want Square to force some new storyline unto the already finished, and genius original one..

Who said it needs to be a sequel of the same story?  You seem to be assuming here that it isn't possible to pull off a different (and decent) story in the same universe with the same characters.

but a different story in the same universe is not what I would call a sequel.. that's just using the same setting..

You're right.  A "series" is the proper definition for what I'm thinking.  A sequel would by nature need to continue an aspect of the original storyline.

I hear it's not as great in graphics (blurry) and sound (midi vs wav on the PS1) compared to the PS1 version.

That aside and actually playing it, it runs at a low resolution and everything is blurry which gives me a headache after a while of playing and for a long RPG like this, that's not a good thing.
