Today it would destroy the earth itself with its god-awfulness. FFVII's story was self-contained and complete. It was written without any sequels or prequels in mind. None of the "compilation" entries have contributed anything worthwhile or meaningful to it, and if you haven't noticed, their plots have all been horrible monstrosities (that's not to say they didn't have other charms). I absolutely hate, hate, hate this milking of franchises, this sending the characters on new wacky adventures each week like some bastardized Saturday morning Disney spinoff. Frankly, I don't trust Square anymore even with a remake. I don't think they have any idea anymore what made it great, and they're swinging blindly in the dark. They're bound to screw it up, and asking them to toss together an original story could only be a thousand times worse. |
Who said it needs to be a sequel of the same story? You seem to be assuming here that it isn't possible to pull off a different (and decent) story in the same universe with the same characters.
