Forums - Nintendo - Homebrew Channel Beta releases to the public

"This weekend saw the release of the "semi-official" Homebrew Channel, created by hard-working members of the Wii's homebrew community. The release, which is available to the public, lets you run homebrew on your console without having to perform the Twilight Hack. Also, you're no longer restricted to a ten-minute demo.

The release comes with a few applications, like Tetris, a Nintendo 64 Emulator, Wii Linux, ScummVM, and Gecko Region Free. Just remember: keep it legal, kids."

Wow... this is INSANE. Unfortunately, Ninty will be clamping down hard on this - no doubt at all. Its opening the doors to piracy like nothing else.

Not reallythey still didn't block the twilight hack and that has been out for months.

An N64 emulator?  I'll just assume that will be for homebrewed 64 games for my own sanity.

As for the Twilight hack... that one is so ridiculiously uncommon i doubt they saw the need.

That was a small issue.  It was so uncommon I'm sure they saw no need to deal with it.  Anyone can use this, and I doubt it will even take a full week to get the firmware to shut this down.

That wouldn't make sense though because don't you have to use the twilight hack to install this? That means it's just as small or smaller than the twilight hack. The only other way I think is if your wii is modded.

You only use the Twilight hack once then the channel is installed.  It's extremely doubtful Nintendo will let something so easy to use go.

then another week for it to pop back up. I have to give it to the homebrew community. I wish Nini would just allow this. I'd love to see Linux on the Wii. Homebrew is not illegal.

Well, they were smart enough to not allow people to play pirated Wii games on it, but it's still not something Nintendo will like (especially with an N64 emulator).

If you read the FAQ, they say there is no way to erase the record of the channel being on your Wii. That means once you download and install this channel, you will never be able to send your Wii in for repairs again, and you may end up being unable to play future Wii games online.
