Forums - Gaming - IGN has an interesting debate

I'm sorry, but this does not sound like an interesting question. I'm sure IGN has other really good & interesting questions.

well, I have zero idea what IGN was basing the segment on. So it took the sales approach.

Wii fanboyism?  Where?

Not a single person in this thread has picked Wii Fit.

And if they did, they wouldn't be a fanboy.  They'd be WRONG.

Let's see....

WoW has sold 15 Million games. That is about $60 Million+. They have 10 million subscribers. To be fair, many of them have quit, but they still paid subscription fees. It has been around for a few years, so that is calculated to be about 2-2.3 Billion Dollars.

WiiFit selling at $90 would have to sell 22 Million copies to beat it. That is entirely plausible since it is selling faster than WiiPlay.. This is not counting future subscribers though, so this debate is very open.

YOu are forgetting developement costs, server expenses, updates, etc that mmos need.

There is a huge difference between revenue and profit. I could see Wii Fit competing in terms of profit but not in terms of revenue.

Unit sales could be another close one depending on how you tabulate it.

To Each Man, Responsibility

WoW! Epic debate or maybe not. Still, worth posting, though. Well, WoW generates 1.8 bill annually and Bliz profits 1.1, which about .9 bill is due to WoW. I feel that Wii Fit will probably generate 2.5 bill in profit lifetime. I'm sure most would agree that Wii Fit will have at least a billion $ in sales and maybe as much as $10 billion. If you're talking about direct profit from Wii Fit, then it's going to be worth about 2+1/2 yrs of WoW sales, which is amazing anyway you look at it. Of course, Wii Fit is going to move consoles (long term, not huge sale upfront) and get people to buy more games. How many more, is a complete mystery. In the end, WoW wins hands down, because it owns it's legions of users.

I'm just going on what I've heard, not that I'm the definitive source or anything. So if you have more concrete #'s and a deeper analysis of the situation, I'd love to hear it.

WoW will sell more, that's obvious.

As for the people who think WoW is a casual game, I disagree. WoW is less complex then other MMO's, but the people who play it are the same gamer. Plus, most people who play it check online builds, PVP stats, and techniques, and will spend 30 hours doing an instance for 1 drop (doing it over and over again).

That's not the definition of a casual gamer.
