As far as I am concerned it is a cake, but only in the sense that a cake is a sweet pudding that you cut into to share out.

I suppose in reality it is a tart, that being a base with a "filling" on top.

It is definately not a pie.... a pie has to have a lid.

My English teacher debated this with the class for like 30 minutes and we came to the conclusion that it is in fact a PIE.

Well this is the way I see it, and I have taken the Dutch translations here to make my point (with pie being translated as Taart, and cake just being cake)

Which of the two pictures resemble cheesecake the most?

And there are more words in english that say one thing, but doesn't exactly mean that the thing it refers to is true. A bloodorange for instance, does not contain any blood..

That cake picture looks more like bread than cake.

Anyway, according to wikipedia, it is a type of pie or tart, so there you have it.

Cheesecake is large family of sweet, cheese-based pies or tarts.
