Forums - Sales - MGS4 Pre-Order Numbers -- JAP + NA

MGS1 - 6 million

MGS2 - 7 million

MGS3 - 5 million

Yes, but with a huge hardware install base. You Sony fanboys need to remember that this is not the PS1 or PS2 era. PS3 can't have the same sales as before. Now the PS3 is the system with the lower install base.

Heck, the biggest seller exclusive game is Motorstorm with 3.2 million, and thats because it was bundled. MGS will not have the same numbers as GTA or CoD4.

Im not saying its going to be a bad game. It will be good. But not the best selling title or not a record breaker.

Not very good pre order sales numbers. I assume more people will just come in off the street and buy MGS 4 and boost the numbers significantly.
BTW: I never pre order games. I buy a new release game in the first week, just walk in buy.

Depends on the game.  DMC4 has sold over 300k in Japan so far, while DMC3 barely reached 350k lifetime.  WW the ps3 version of DMC4 has already sold 1.18 million, when DMC3 sold 1.92 million lifetime.

Similarly, Insomniac said Ratchet & Clank Future is selling at about the same rate their ps2 R&Cs sold.

Some franchises even recieve a bump in sales upon entering a new generation, due to the boost in visuals (and other areas) that will entice half hearted fans to actually pick up a copy of the game.  This is why FFX drastically outsold FFIX despite releasing on a much smaller install base (at the time), and why GT3 outsold GT2.  Something similar seems to be happening to DMC4. MGS4 will be the first "next-gen" MGS, so many people who skipped MGS3 may go for it, in addition to newcomers to the series.

Also, the fact that controls have been diversified to cater to both the western and eastern audiences should help sales a bit.  Kojima stated he tried to make MGS4 open to a much wider demographic than previous MGSes, so it could pull a CoD4 (as in sell better than it's predecessors).  It certainly has more than enough hype.

And while MGS may be a very story-centric series, you need no prior knowledge of the series to play MGS4.  During cutscenes in MGS4, you can press a button that will provide you with background information regarding what's going on.

Barring install bases, MGS4 certainly has the potential for great sales.

Anyone who thinks this game CAN'T be made on a 360 needs their head checked. Sure there will be some loss of visual/audio quality, sure it may come out on 2 or 3 discs, and sure there might be some cutscenes cut - but it doesn't really affect the game or the quality of the game.

Bringing it to the PS3 only was a business decision, NOT a technical one. The technical hurdles can be easily overcome if they want to.

Bringing it to the Wii or DS however... now that would pose some technical headaches :)

@Rocketpig

would you buy a PS3 3 weeks before MGS4 comes out or MGS4 bundled with it on the day it comes out??

we both know the logical answer

before DW 6 came out last year 360 outsold Ps3 & PS3 was very low....the next week PS3 went to 50K

why because people went for the bundle instead of buying it a week before

your argument makes no sense..

Well, obviously bundle sales will increase the week of launch... Even then, look at data for other big games. Sales never seem to drop before release, at least not during the games I remember.

In two weeks we'll know for sure. I find it strange, that's all. If this game flops in Japan, there's a good chance the entire FF team at Square drops dead of a heart attack the next day. There are several companies with a lot riding on Sony's console in Japan.

Well the drop is like 2000. So you could say that this week 2000 people in japan decided to wait to buy a PS3 for 3 weeks and get a game they would like for free....

That's what I'm doing, and by doing it I'm lowering the UK PS3 sales this week by waiting another 3 weeks rather than buying now...

Actually, the people in Japan who buy the bundle aren't getting the game for free. If they buy the bundle they actually have to pay MORE for it than buying them separately. The bundle cost is 49,800 yen; however, if you buy the system (39,980 yen) and MGS4 game (8,800 yen) you only have to pay 48,780 yen, which is a savings of about $10.

I'm pretty sure the bundle with the special edition game costs more ~51,900 yen, so you do have to pay the extra $20 or so for the Special Edition game. The other bundles have the regular edition of the game.

none of those bundles actually save you any money? I know in Japan most bundles don't have great value, but i thought they would save you a little bit of money.
