MGS1 - 6 million MGS2 - 7 million MGS3 - 5 million |
Yes, but with a huge hardware install base. You Sony fanboys need to remember that this is not the PS1 or PS2 era. PS3 can't have the same sales as before. Now the PS3 is the system with the lower install base. Heck, the biggest seller exclusive game is Motorstorm with 3.2 million, and thats because it was bundled. MGS will not have the same numbers as GTA or CoD4. Im not saying its going to be a bad game. It will be good. But not the best selling title or not a record breaker. |
Depends on the game. DMC4 has sold over 300k in Japan so far, while DMC3 barely reached 350k lifetime. WW the ps3 version of DMC4 has already sold 1.18 million, when DMC3 sold 1.92 million lifetime.
Similarly, Insomniac said Ratchet & Clank Future is selling at about the same rate their ps2 R&Cs sold.
Some franchises even recieve a bump in sales upon entering a new generation, due to the boost in visuals (and other areas) that will entice half hearted fans to actually pick up a copy of the game. This is why FFX drastically outsold FFIX despite releasing on a much smaller install base (at the time), and why GT3 outsold GT2. Something similar seems to be happening to DMC4. MGS4 will be the first "next-gen" MGS, so many people who skipped MGS3 may go for it, in addition to newcomers to the series.
Also, the fact that controls have been diversified to cater to both the western and eastern audiences should help sales a bit. Kojima stated he tried to make MGS4 open to a much wider demographic than previous MGSes, so it could pull a CoD4 (as in sell better than it's predecessors). It certainly has more than enough hype.
And while MGS may be a very story-centric series, you need no prior knowledge of the series to play MGS4. During cutscenes in MGS4, you can press a button that will provide you with background information regarding what's going on.
Barring install bases, MGS4 certainly has the potential for great sales.
