Okay I forgot for a moment that marketing is everything today. Well, then both meanings are valid nowadays with all these song collections labeled as "Official Soundtrack". But for me a real good soundtrack can only be an original one, meaning originally composed for the movie. (Of course this doesn't necessarily mean that all original soundtracks are good.)

The term Official Soundtrack never made much sense to me in the context of movie music and it's normally an implication for me that the soundtrack is just another collection of old and/or new songs quickly put together for the movie.

Although I have to admit that there are some good song collections used for movies, e.g. Goodfellas, Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs, Jackie Brown, Trainspotting and all Woody Allen movies. Good directors like Allen, Scorsese and Tarantino know how to use their own favourite songs/music pieces in their movies in a very subtle way.

The Lord of the Rings (all of them)

Gladiator

Star Trek III: The Search for Spock

Ben-Hur

There's a whole lot more, but the list would be too long and it would take too long for me to remember every single one.

Like the 'Official Soundtrack' to the blair witch project? A film with only 1 song in it. And music 'inspired by' always pisses me off as well.
Also, Tarantino=win when it comes to compilation soundtracks.

I'm surprised no one has managed the Indiana Jones score yet.

Also a shout-out to "The good, the bad and the ugly".

I forgot one in my personal favourites list:

The Dark Crystal (Trevor Jones)

One of the best fantasy movie soundtracks ever composed, in my opinion. I re-discovered this gem from 1982 only recently and now I can't stop listening to the epic main theme and the beautiful love theme. I can recommend the nice movie as well - a small success for Jim Henson then (the tone of the movie was too dark for children and the plot was too limited for adults - even for a fantasy movie).
