But for me a real good soundtrack can only be an original one, meaning originally composed for the movie. (Of course this doesn't necessarily mean that all original soundtracks are good.) The term Official Soundtrack never made much sense to me in the context of movie music and it's normally an implication for me that the soundtrack is just another collection of old and/or new songs quickly put together for the movie. Although I have to admit that there are some good song collections used for movies, e.g. Goodfellas, Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs, Jackie Brown, Trainspotting and all Woody Allen movies. Good directors like Allen, Scorsese and Tarantino know how to use their own favourite songs/music pieces in their movies in a very subtle way.
