Forums - Sony - Haze developer says it's not "true HD". Performance more important.

Haze Not In HD

While the PlayStation.com blog says that Haze runs at 720p, the game's creative lead Derek Littlewood begs to differ, saying the game runs at 576p, letting the PS3 upscale the game. Says Littlewood:

We prioritise a nice smooth framerate over a different res. Personally, I don’t really buy the whole thing. People did the same with Call of Duty, they did the same with Halo, and they say with those games ‘It’s not running at true HD!’ And it’s like, I don’t care. If the game looks good and it runs smoothly, those are the important things to me.

When Derek Littlewood is right, Derek Littlewood is right. There are more important things, like whether or not a game is any good or whether your pre-order should be canceled.
Final Resolution Confirmed [Ripten via videogaming247]

Honestly, this doesn't surprise me, simply because the HD consoles, both of them, have small frame buffers. Even when the systems are optimized, this issue won't go away.

A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.

Framerate should always come first.

But who can actually notice the difference of a few more or less pixels?

I agree. My main concern is with the gameplay, especially as I don't even have an HDTV with my PS3

So where are all those people swearing the guy was just making stuff up? I love it when people talking out their ass get put in their place. I would go on and on, but in the end the resolution numbers are entirely meaningless on their own. So long as the game is fun to play, the rest is meaningless. Being pretty to look at is a nice perk, but so long as it looks pretty then the numbers are again meaningless.

I guess the holy altar Sony has forsaken the Haze developers and chosen not to bestow the true "powah of teh C3LL" and HD gaming goodness unto them.

Ah well, the only people this will bother are the people who were obsessed with 1080p/720p from the start.  The rest of us who shrug and ask if it's a fun game regardless will be fine.

It'll still output at 720p and Haze still looks very nice. Honestly resolution matters more on PCs, not consoles.

Why would anyone still complain about sub 720p after COD4 and Halo3? doesn't make sense to me, there's more to graphics than resolution and pixels. IMO, as far as FPS games are concerned, 60fps or locked 30fps is most important.

I agree and I think viewing distance is a good part of that.  640x480 is ugly on a PC but seems fine for the Wii.

I would argue it only matters on PC games if they have a lot of text. I could play any FPS at 640x480 without complaint.
