BTW, Rubang, I suspect that you're an early REM fan by your demeanor. Just a few moments ago, I saw the video for Orange Crush for the first time. That video is amazing. It also marked the end of amazing REM songs that aren't massively popular. Agree? Disagree? 

Well I wouldn't count Punch Drunk Love as "an Adam Sandler movie." I was talking more about his writing. Yeah it's the best film that just so happens to have him in it, and it's his best performance ever by a long shot.

PTA can get amazing performances out of anybody. Marky Mark was the perfect Dirk Diggler, and that guy can't act his way out of a paper bag in any other movie. And when PTA actually works with somebody who can act... crazy incredible shit like There Will Be Blood happens.

I don't remember "Orange Crush." But what I do know is the 3 biggest touring bands of the 90's were the Rolling Stones, REM, and Depeche Mode. I read that somewhere... And of the few REM songs I remember, I think they were better when Stipe had hair. I feel the same way about the Red Hot Chili Peppers... And the Smashing Pumpkins... Conspiracy?

I'll czech out that video though. I have this vague sense of them being good and going bad but I have no idea when and can barely name 2 albums. I used to listen to nothing but Sonic Youth, Nirvana, and the Beatles at that point in my life.

True, PTA can get a performance out of anybody... He even managed to get Tom Cruise to not act lke Tom Cruise in the latter half of Magnolia, a feat that even the mighty Kubrick couldn't manage for 90% of Eyes Wide Shut.

And you're really missing out on REM... Start with Life's Rich Pageant and then move on to Murmur. You're good all the way up to Monster but I don't recommend Green/Out of Time/Automatic for the People/Monster as highly as their first five albums. Their early stuff was grittier and darker and IMO it made for much better music. 

They had 5 albums before that?!?!? Damn. I think Monster is the only one I've heard all the way through. I actually downloaded the whole album just to hear "What's the Frequency, Kenneth?" after I read about the "Kenneth, what is the frequency?" story about Dan Rather.

Yeah, REM has been around forever. I haven't listened to much of their new stuff (post 1997 or whenever Up came out) but I heard their new album isn't bad.

Most people talk about their early 90s stuff but I think it's definitely inferior to their first few albums, though some of the individual songs from Automatic for the People and Monster were pretty fuckin' awesome. I also try to forget that Shiny Happy People ever happened.
