Forums - Sony - Sony have thrown in the PS3 towel... (for now anyway)

Thanks for taking my question. I guess as a follow-up to Evan's third question, I was hoping you could maybe provide a little more detail on the linearity of sales of the PS3 on a quarterly basis, assuming that the production level is pretty stable at around 800,000 units a month, just looking at the implied guidance. And related to that, to achieve profitability in the game segment, is it necessary to maintain the current retail pricing?

Nobuyuki Oneda - Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer

Yes, we don't give the quarterly information, but I could give you some guidelines. The game business itself is pretty much the seasonally affected business. So therefore the second half of the fiscal year, we would sell more quantity than the first half. And the pricing itself, basically we don't disclose any pricing strategies for the coming year, but as I said that the... we don't aggressively adjust the price for the coming year. And to maintain the 10 million level of the quantity this year, I don't think that we really have to adjust the pricing so much.

Okay. But it sounds like on balance you are favoring the profitability over unit sales and market share, is that a fair characterization?

Nobuyuki Oneda - Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer

Yes.

Colin Sebastian - Lazard

Allright, thank you.

Good read - but the strategy you outline doesn't conform to the term 'throwing in the towel', which means conceding final defeat. You throw in the towel in boxing to end the match and leave, not to go back to your corner to get freshed up and concentrate on making it through the next few rounds.

Good points though, but I feel we've had too many threads with attention grabbing titles using potentially inflamatory languague as it is so I'd like a break from them if possible.

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

Thanks, that is the article I was looking for - and what spurred this thread in the first place.

@Reasonable: Did you miss the "(for now anyway)" in the thread title? It is there for a reason.

In theory, being critical of anything can be construed as "using potentially inflamatory languague".

Queue the first Mr Hanky South Park episode...

Anyway, I'm VERY glad this thread didn't turn into a flame fest. Its been very mature and intelligent discussion all round :)

I think this is fairly accurate in general. I think the issue with the wording of "throwing in the towel" is a bit of a cultural misunderstanding.

Sorry, that i must dissapoint you all... =)

But do you people consider, how much PROFIT Sony made and WILL make on blu-ray winning as HD format?
How much Sony was able to increase numbers of sold TVs, thnx to blu-ray winning?

PS3 had 2 targets to achieve, win HD war + bring HD to masses and make a profit in Gaming sector.
PS3 already achieved first target and that`s why PS3 is a SUCCESS. =)

Why don't you tell us? How much profit can Sony make from Blu-Ray, considering that the Blu-Ray consortium is composed of many companies? How much does Sony stand to make from royalties? Is that worth the loss the Playstation brand has suffered in this generation?

Since you claim to know the PS3 is a success, I'm sure you'll have satisfactory answers to these questions.

Ur point, CrazzyMan, is interesting and we should keep it in mind but it is difficult to see if the BR market is really growing compared to last year and if this allow Sony to make a lot of money (as u are expecting).

Yeah Sony's screwed.

@NJ5, you are free to answer to your question, lol. =))

Playstation brand suffered nothing in this generation, PS3 having RROD? lol.
