Well Sony owns a lot of recognizable characters, some more than others:

Jak and Daxter
Ratchet and Clank
Kratos
Sly Cooper
SackBoy
Nathan Drake
Nathan Hale
Gabe Logan
Nariko
Helghast

As well as some unnamed characters like
MediEvil guy
ISA soldiers (maybe more of a focus on Sev this time around will help recognizability)
ICO or Wanda, whatever his name was
SOCOM soldiers
HSG characters
Infamous dude

Compare that list with the ones they had when the PS2 came out.

Probably some others I'm forgetting too, what they all have in common though is that none of them are mascots, when I say Halo or Master Chief, you think of the XBox brand, when I say Mario or Zelda, you think of Nintendo, maybe the closest Sony got is Jak and Ratchet, or maybe even Kratos, but it's not quite up there yet.

However Sony is getting itself quite a nice collection of recognizable characters though.

When I saw the thread title and entered the thread, I was like, oh god, I'm going to have to read "but SSBB sold lots and we don't know what sales LBP will have" like that's the OP's point, and "SSBB was a fighter and LBP isn't" like that's the OP's point.  Check and check, and on down the predictable OT line.

I never dreamed that I'd see selnor's bare "LBP is nothing like SSBB" though.  I agree, and add that it's still yet to be determined which will be a better game.  I definitely think LBP has a great chance to be a brilliant new kind of experience.

My roommates are all back to playing Melee because they say Brawl is broken, has too short hit-stun times, has worse controls than Melee, and is broken.  There, some OT for y'all.

Answer to the OP: NO! Not even close. I don't think this game will come even close to the hype when it comes to sales and popularity. It probably has a chance to match the hype when it comes to gameplay though. I just don't see how this game will sell as many copies as people are predicting it will, when it appears to be more suited for the Wii demographic, not the PS3s. Just my take on things.
