Forums - Microsoft - Why RRoD is a good thing.

It's a funny thing with RRoD. My 360 got spilt on with juice by my 1 year old daughter. Oh I was mad. But the HDD is fine. I obviously wanted a new 360, but was waiting for Jasper chip. However I saw a RRoD 360 on Ebay for £30. Which I bought. I've ordered 2 red neon cooling fans for less than £10, and Brand new Arctic silver heat sink paste to go between the heat sink and CPU/GPU. On top of that I have a complete outside Half life 2 case coming. All together I have a 360 more reliable than I can buy even with Jasper and it cost me £67.68p. I'll post pics wen my HL 2 cover comes.

See most people probably dont realise that RRoD actually happens because the sink paste in the 360 isnt enough. It heats up and starts to disperse slightly causeing the sink to get closr to the CPU/GPU. By Increasing the quality of the sink paste and covering the entire die on both CPU/GPU, this is completely avoided but make sure you add 2 more cooling fans to eliminate the heat rising. According to my mates reports on his experimentation with his out of warranty 360. He actually changed the existing fans for much quieter ones and added 2 more. The tempertaure on the inside of the 360 over a 2 hour gaming period using Mass Effect before the change was 73 degrees. After his mods it was 38!.

Thankyou RRoD. I now have an awesome looking, quiet, cool reliable machine for less than half the price of an Arcade. Funny how the world goes round.

That sounds like too much hassle and something you would expect to do to a PC.

RROD is the worst thing that could have happened to the 360.
But credit to the 360, because of it's games, people still come back, which is its saving grace.

You could just as easily have not been able to get it working, however. There appear to be several distinct causes of RRoD, and some of the others can't be fixed by you.

Good for you anyway, quite the bargain!

But in all honesty the regular person would not want to go to all that hassle when the console bought should have never had issues like these in the first place! Either way you look at it, the RRoD was, and to some extent, still is a major issue.

I'm surprised by the people that constantly go back to the 360 after this issue, i know someone that has been through 4 360's... i would have given up after the 2nd!

I disagree with the thread title. RROD is a terrible thing for the 360. Some people have bought PS3's out of protest. Modifying your 360 by putting in a fan cooling system seems like a hassle.

It sounds like MS PR spin to me.

Some serious spin-doctoring in this thread.

lol how does that sound like MS pr spin.

It is a hassle, but the repair kit on ebay costs 4 quid, a rrod 360 is 30 quid.

Soooo, if you had experience with computer components, you could get yourself a very cheap Xbox.

In that sense it is a good thing, but overall ofcourse the rrod is a bad thing.

Oh I totally understand that mainstream wont do this. But from a money point of view from me, it's a god save. I saved so much money. and it's like an hour and a half at most. Thing is its enjoyable to. Like art. I loved doing it.

Also at Soleron. This is like 99% of the cause of RRoD. Only a few have had motherboards crack. Thats it. 3 rings stand for general hardware failiure. And the modding of 360 is just to good to pass up. Also the 360 opening kit off Llama is great for cleaning it of dust every year. I reckon I could have this 360 running for like 20 years.

So why don't M$ include some of these extra additions

selnor is trying to sell the idea that negative issue RROD can be turned into something positive. Providing you are willing to put the time and effort into modifying your XBox 360 by putting in a new fan cooling system.

BTW: You go to the effort of putting in a fan cooling system. Why not just put in a 360 mod chip in as well?
