These threads invariably end up clogged with urban legends and other questionable stuff. How the heck has someone supposedly been able to measure the 9 years of yellin -> cup of coffee thing?
Oh well, might as well use this to dispel urban legends.
The world was generally believed to be round during the Middle Ages, and Flat Earth was never a part of official church dogma. The big gamble of Cristopher Columbus was that he thought the diameter of the Earth to be about a third of its actual size, and that it would be easy to reach India by sailing west. He was completely wrong, but the existance of a silly little piece of land known as the Americas saved his butt. =P
