Forums - Nintendo - wii and amazing sales

In about a month and a few weeks the wii is going to pass the SEGA MAGADRIVE(29mil), sega's best selling console then soon after the Atari 2600 (30million), nintendo 64(32million), in soon after the psp(34million as of now) if sales continue the way they are. In march 2009 nintendo plans on selling 50million wii's total that would be about 28months total the wii has been around and that would be 100,000 more than the Super Nes. Do you think so? (50mil by march 2009.) If this does happen the wii has the potential to pass every console ever made to find these numbers look up BEST CONSOLE on wikipidia. to find nintendo's 50million plan tipe wii in at wikipidia.com What could this mean for nintendo fans, could it mean better games, more exclusives than the other 2 consoles, I think so but I think the wii has to pass ps3 and xbox360 both combined because of the hardware, ps3 and 360's are simular the wii's is different thats how I came up with this guess. Nintendo wii still has 4 more countries to be released in, no price drop in the near future because of demand and 2.4million assembled a month. How long do you think It will take for the ps3 and the xbox360 to pass the SEGA MAGADRIVE? could ps3 sales and price drops stop this? Do you think the wii is going to win the console war? how long do you think the wii will last, longer than the ps3 and 360 or not? Most importantly do you think wii can pass the ps2 at 127million sales? (wii is at 25.87million now)

whats a Sega GENIUS?

On topic: I think the Wii can easily reach 50 million, With titles like Wii Fit coming out, and a steady stream of 1st party and better 3rd party games. Their's no stopping Wii.

I think you mean "Genesis".

wow I can't believe you came here D.o.c

50mil is alot but It looks like the wii can pass that number. It has four more countries to be released in.

I know this horse has been beat to death around here but I want to point out again for any doubters that Nintendo as a company is conservative in their estimates 100% of the time. If they are saying publicly that they think 50m for March '09 then you can probably expect something more like 53M-54M. They don't like to have egg on their faces.

Its not only possible they meet this goal its actually very probable.  Honestly, some people will tell you that it will hit 60M before the end of this year (JohnLucas).  A few months ago that seemed "completely batshit insane"...right now it only seems just "pretty insane" and a month after Wii Fit it might only seem "unlikely".  Who knows, the Wii's sales are insane, so maybe it takes insane predictions to keep up with it?

Wow! 50 million this early. That's a lot. Now can Nintendo handle Wii Online Gaming with that so many consoles? Games will definitely come because it will reach such high console base early on to its life cycle.

I hope your right sqrl but you have to do the math 1.2 mil to go this month and 2.4 on out I didn't add this so I don't know the total

Hmm? The production was at 1.8m before they announced the increase and knowing Nintendo the increase was probably decided on right after or during the holidays when they realized just how short they were coming up with supply. I'm not sure what you're referring to with 1.2M?

On the subject of when the production will hit 2.4M, this is a quote of myself from another thread:

Nintendo Briefing: http://www.nintendo.co.jp/ir/en/library/events/080425/

Slide in question:Text associated with slide:

About our forecasts for main hardware and software, we are expecting to ship 28million DS hardware units and 187million DS software units, as well as 25million Wii hardware units and 177million units of Wii software.
To achieve these goals, we are preparing for a Wii production increase so that our monthly Wii hardware production capability will reach 2.4million units in July this year.

This is the 8th entry down from the top of the link. I'm not sure what the hell is up with the slide or how it relates exactly. Either way this is a statement from a Nintendo Official at an Official Nintendo event about Official Nintendo Financial Information....or in other words as official as they come.

So it won't quite be at 2.4M until July, I suspect the average for June will be somewhere around 2.2m.
