I don't know how much coverage you get of Zimbabwe in the US but I'm going to assume you know what's going on there. I can't comprehend why we're in Iraq but not Zimbabwe which is far worse.

Gruesome photographs of Mugabe violence that the Daily Mail wouldn't publish

Yesterday I noted Peter Oborne's chilling article about a young woman called Memory, in Zimbabwe.  Memory had her buttocks repeatedly thrashed by wooden poles - all because she is a supporter of the opposition to Robert Mugabe.

I was speaking to Peter about his undercover journalism yesterday evening and he has emailed me two photographs of Memory's savagely beaten body.  The Daily Mail - quite understandably for a family newspaper - didn't want to publish the photographs but I reproduce them below as one powerful proof of the horror that Mugabe is presiding over in Zimbabwe.  They are gruesome so please do not press "Continue reading..." if you are disturbed by bloody images.

The low to which people sink to attain and/or retain power sickens me as much as those pictures. And unless North Americans watch/listen to the world service, we only get very very short world news segments on news programs, and they usually do not show such graphic pictures.

Our mainstream media won't publish pictures like that but if you have a look at the link at the bottom you'll see they will at least report it. What I find worrying is that the blog that published the pictures and the newspaper that printed the article are both very right wing (by UK standards) and the majority of the press in Britain is left wing and not giving it so much coverage. They seem to be (sort of understandably) worried about criticising Zimbabwe too much because they used to be a colony of ours.

For any North American wanting to get global news the BBC's website is a good place to start. The "world" frontpage is here: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/default.stm They have a fair amount of coverage of Zimbabwe as well as the earthquake in China, the cyclone in Burma and other lower profile stories around the world.

Yeah. I've been following the Zimbabwe story for a while now. I want to say about a year. Doing the actual research on it makes it an even sadder story.

They went from a prosperous food exporting nation called the "Bread Basket of Africa" yet, not quite equal nation... to a starving economically riddled country because they were convinced by Mugabe to seize the land, that never made it to other competant farmers, but isntead to his own allies.

Since then things have gotten worse, and he's just used more power to steal everything.

Sad, considering that during their fights for independence he was their greatest hero... and was voted into office.
