As internet-wise im a bit useless, am i to assume i simply buy a router, plug it into the ps3, follow the instructions and the ps3 will just run off the tiscali internet connection we have downstairs?

Yes?

btw thanks for your responses dogsrule

no ,you conncet the router downstaris to the wall plug of your internet and It sends the internet conncection wirelessly up for your PS3 to use.

I would recommend mine, but its price is quite hefty since it has built in VPN. It's a Linksys BEFVP41. With it I get NAT type 2 without changing any of the default settings despite having 2 PS3's online at the same time.

Ah thanks a lot spartan...internet gaming isnt my strongpoint lol

Thanks a lot dogsrule, im going to have a look at yours now on google, i have a pretty much unlimited price range but obviously i dont want to spend more than i have to ;)

I hope my 360 doesn't RRoD

yes, all modern ethernet cables (Cat 5) are the same.

do they make routers that support Cat 6?

Any gigabit router would require them for gigabit speeds.

most of router have firewall ,,means they tend to slow new connections to the router,,so they can slow your gaming experince,,,,there is an option in the router menu (mos of the router menus are on theri websites,,,provided to you in the instruction)the option is called DMZ(demilitarized zone),,,you have to learn how to DMZ your PS3 PROPERLY(i can explain it to you if you wanted),,,this will allow all the connections from PS3 go through without the fire wall interruption.but again it has to be done properly.

I would personally recommend an open source router from Linksys. The reason being you can get any feature you would ever want if you really want it.

The Linksys WRT54GL is your going to be your cheapest option ($60/£40). You'll get your choice of quality open source firmwares but I recommend Tomato because it's very user friendly. It has wireless-G and a 4-port 100mb switch.

If you really need more you can move up to the Linksys WRT300N (wireless-N) or the Linksys WRT310N (wireless-N and gigabit ethernet). Because these are excessive for the average user and because they aren't fully supported by third-party firmware makers I don't recommend them at the moment. I mean obviously if you need the said features you can just run them on the original Linksys firmware until the third party guys get their stuff together.

The reason I recommend these open source routers is because they have more features and will be supported longer by the third-party firmware makers than Linksys will support them. You pay a little extra but it's well worth it.
