@Final... Former generation was entirely different. RPG's were on a productive scale, you wouldn't believe it. Therefore.. how can gamers change so fast? I haven't changed of being a RPG fan. I have a WII and a DS like I had a GBA and GC in the former generation. I have a PSP and PS3 like I had a .... well PS2 only in the former generation. Despite the fact I have a WII / DS you don't see me buying brain training games, cooking and how to run your houshold. Just about 2 years ago, RPG's were dominating the lists all the time and all of the sudden... poof... gone. Not a surprise if they keep on waiting with releasing or releasing on the wrong consoles which make the game bound to sell bad Plus, Paper Mario isn't really a RPG, more an action / adventure, like Folklore is on the PS3 and Dragon Quest Swords is just a short hack n slash game, nothing more. You can't compare these games with the almighty Dragon Quest, Final Fantasy, Tales of..., Shin Megami Tensei, or any other kind of die hard RPG.

Yeah, Japan seems to have the tendency to change overnight and do so all at once. In America, people liked FPS games last two generations and still like FPS games today like there is no tomorrow, despite the Wii being here.

The anime industry is also not in such good shape as it used to be too, but that's a different story, although both go hand in hand with jRPGs. My guess is that the jRPG / anime scene is now reduced to the people that hang out in Akihabara all the time.

Yet PS2 and DS RPGs are still selling well to my knowledge aren't they?

Do you know what World Ends with You numbers are?  For the PS2, they still have most of the old jRPG base.  The first true jRPG test on PS3 will be WKC, when ever that's supposed to get out.  Valkyrie of the Battlefield did better than I had expected.  I honestly didn't think it would make 75k sales LTD in Japan with the way things were going.

"Naturally the common people don't want war: Neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, IT IS THE LEADERS of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is TELL THEM THEY ARE BEING ATTACKED, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. IT WORKS THE SAME IN ANY COUNTRY."  --Hermann Goering, leading Nazi party member, at the Nuremberg War Crime Trials

Is that even out in Japan? All I see for it is US numbers. You've got to keep in mind that they're RPGs as well.

I mean how many RPGs on the PS2 sold more then 500,000 units? (Which is what the source predicts for that particular game.)

Not many.

When you take out the ones not DQ, FF or involving FF... the numbers are quite small.

That's why basically every RPG is low budget in the first place.

Also if RPG fans are outgrowing them... why are they still buying them?  Isn't it possible just that Japan doesn't want to buy 360's and PS3 is just to overpriced for your average RPG fan?

HD gaming market is dead in Japan. Japan is a one console per generation, this time round the Wii. Both portables are doing well in Japan.

If you're talking about the World Ends with You, then yes it came out last year here. It's listed on VGC as "Its a Wonderful World" (Subarashiki kono sekai)which is why the US and JP listings are different.

There was actually a special edition DS bundle released when it first came out too.

I've seen the DS in some used shops.

OT: The PS3 is on life support in Japan and things just keep getting worse and worse.  It'll most likely see a small bump for MGS4 and then drop like a rock again.

Why is this week boring? Cause PS3 didnt sell as well as you wanted, lol.
Exciting week, seems like Wii sales might experience a small weekly avrg rise, thanks to MKWii I guess.

Meh... not really.

Try posting again, this time without the personal jabs, and I'll tell you why this week is boring.

Yeah. I'm starting to think jRPGs and hardcore Japanese games is going to be the big loss this generation. The younger generation wants cooking, housekeeping, pet, and various daily routine simulators, while the older generation that likes jRPGs is waning off.

Or... maybe the publishers of JRPGs should try putting them on the platform that's selling like hotcakes before crying over terrible sales. There's been two RPGs of any note on the Wii: Super Paper Mario and Dragon Quest Swords. Neither one really fits the mold of a traditional RPG, and neither one was exactly top quality. Both sold more than 500k copies (in Japan only) - more than any game released on the PS3 so far.

I mean, the Gamecube didn't exactly sell RPGs too well last generation either in Japan (unless you count Animal Crossing, which is really a stretch). Paper Mario was the best at 458k, and the next-best after that is FF: Crystal Chronicles (358k) and Tales of Symphonia (314k).

The second-place console in Japan just doesn't sell much software, period. It's not a genre thing. (Another quick example: the DS and PSP seem to be selling RPGs just fine.

Of course Mario and Dragon Quest will sell alot.

or take a look at (Japanese quality games on Wii):

Zack and Wiki - 30k

No More Heroes - 40k

It's sometimes better to put these kind of games on the 360 over there.

There is this problem also...

I think we will know where Japanese devs stand on the Wii at E3 and TGS. Right now, I don't think there is very much incentive to put quality stuff.

No More Heroes was aimed at a western audience (hence its much improved sales outside of Japan - in fact, worldwide, it's Suda51's best selling game of all time, IIRC).  As for Zack and Wiki, well, I firmly disagree that it would have sold any better on the XBox 360, or even the PS3, all other things equal.  I believe there were other factors, such as a complete lack of hype and advertising, which were much more significant contributing factors to its poor performance than the fact that it was only available on the Wii.  What you're seeing on the chart there is more a consequence of the fact that developers have yet to even test the waters for the presence of demand for the established genres they know and love.  If the DS precedent is to be believed, 3rd parties can and will make inroads on that graph once they get with the program.

Super World Cup Fighter II: Championship 2010 Edition

@DMeisterJ: I cant see why its boring, if you mean the same games all over then yea, but its not boring cause theres 2 platforms selling well PSP and Wii, along with many games. Maybe the definition of "boring" you have differs from mine.

I said boring because it's the same as last week.  Yes, sales for Wii and PSP are good, but that was the case last week, and the week befor that.  The order the consoles are in were the same.  PS3 is still selling crappy, as is the 360.  Wii/PSP are selling good, and DS is doing okay, but reaching saturation...  Nothing new really.  Software is boring too.  Nothing new.  MK Wii first, MHP2G second, same as the last few weeks...  That's why I said boring.  It had nothing to do with the PS3.

That seems about normal numbers for an RPG.  I mean for RPGs that arent' FF or DQ.  500,000 is like their million... and I mean that's world wide sales.

With the Japan numbers up 360 handed the Wii .1% of the market share.

When the VGC/NPD corrections go up due to the 360/PS3 appearing significantly overtracked by VGC, expect Nintendo's market share to increase a bit further.
