Meanwhile Sony has indicated that it is more concerned with profitability than market share and price cuts after it released its financial results yesterday. 

"On its earnings call, Sony management indicated the company is now more focused on achieving profitability in the PlayStation segment... Importantly, management comments also suggest that a price cut is less likely on the PS3 this year, at least in the near term."

Interesting, both MS and Sony are concetrating on profitability.. anyone else picture a green turtle and a black turtle racing to the finish line, with a white hare running past them??

Yeah I do see a white hare running past but on a completely different track with a different audience watching....however the same audience is watching the turtles

Can we officially add "Wii isn't competing with PS360" to the Bingo Board now? It's like the new "Gamecube started well at first too...." and since nobody can say that anymore it should just replace it.

Lol, well I agree with you, even if now is only a two turtles race, the hare is already out of reach, Ninty is already profitable, and the other two turtles are facing the consequences of their actions...

Well, I wouldn't bet on a price cut...but I wouldn't bet against it either. These companies are known to revise their forecasts in the run (you bet they didn't plan to manufacture a 40GB SKU and cut the price so soon, at first), so I guess what they're doing is letting the market play along and after they reach the first goal -reaching profitability as early as this summer- they'll evaluate what further adjustments can be made.

I think SONY will drop the price in EU....I refuse to believe that they are not making a profit by selling it a £300 = $600

Besides SONY is handily outselling the 360....SONY knows they can't catch the way///PS3 is most probably going to outsell GC this year & XB shortly next year...they are seeing the largest surge in sales YOY.....

This doesn't surprise me. PS2 was so massively successful because of it's wide appeal. Sony started the PS3 with a very narrow market appeal - the Xbox's marketshare (first game? Resistance) and undoubtably hoped to broaded out from there but... Nintendo came in and swiped the mass market out from under them.

To compete with the Wii Sony would have to drop the PS3 down to Wii prices, or lower (since Nintendo could easily drop theirs too). To do that would be disasterous profit-wise and in Japan and NA they'd likely still be outsold.

So better for them to forsake 1st place and worry more on profitability. If they truly plan for 10 year lifespan, they can work on expanding their marketshare in 2 years when they can lower their prices to mass market levels profitably.

wii is still competing with ps3/x360 there is huge amount of core games coming to wii in 2008. i don't get it only ps360 fanboys are still trying to tell us that wii is not competing with ps360 because nintendo console have wider library of games with many casual titles in it. but ps2 and psx was same as wii and later when it was clear that psx/ps2 will win generation developers started to make huge amount of core exclusives for winning consoles(same situation is with wii now), but hey i can pretend that psx and ps2 weren't competing with n64 and gc/xbox too.
