EDIT: DOUBLE POST!
The Gamecube was a more deserving console than the XBox as far as being underated goes.
The XBox however did pave the way for XBox Live which is a simply outstanding service. Also, there was a small part of me that wanted an XBox to check out it's modding capabilities. I know there were alot of people who made that powerful box do alot of cool things.
The XBox certainly had it's perks.

As far as I know that was the first console to use Analog Triggers (and to also look like a space ship!). If anything MS whacked a second analog stick on that, the two bumpers and fired away heh.
I do think it was the leader for online play which it has carried over to this generation, so hats off to Microsoft for that.
The xbox had good games, the Gamecube had good games, the ps2 had good games....only one passed the 100 million worldwide sales barrier....

So sales determines what's best? As a self-proclaimed Sony fanboy you are setting yourself up so perfect.
Personally I enjoyed my Xbox. Many hours with some great games. And I don't think I've ever logged as many as hours in any game as I did with Halo 2 LAN games. At one point we had a permanent set up with 2 xboxes and 2 TVs waiting for people to walk in and play (obviously back in college).
If i understand most of you guys defination of best consoles : the xbox 360 has the best gaming library right now, so they are the best console then.

why, its easy to say that espacially when it sold just 25 million copies, but why was it so bad. It didnt play your games? was it costumer service? games? its size? i want to know how was it so bad? |
Oh quite a few things.
First of all, as most know by now, I'm a PC gamer first. My friends were doing everything they could to convince me to buy an Xbox because of Halo. They kept telling me console FPSes were the future blah blah blah. So I bought an Xbox with Halo 2, got on Xbox live, and within an hour my ears burned from cussing todlers and racist BS.
So, after that I rarely ever got online in Halo 2 again. I despised the analog controls that everyone else praised anyway. I looked for other games to buy to entertain me. I bought Ninja Gaiden which lasted me all of 20 more hours. Bought Fable which lasted me another 12 hours. Everything else I'd already played, or was on PC.
So within a month of buying my Xbox I sold it and all the games with it to my friend. Never looked back. I have never seen a console with so few games worth playing. Especially so few exclusives. The 360 has a similar issue, where I'm getting most 360 games worth playing in far better versions on PC.
Oh, and Xbox Live offers nowhere near the kind of online service you get for free on PCs.

@psrock
If you want to generalize it like that then overall game library could determine what is best. But that's so relative. The games I like and the games you like will be completely different so my favorite console would be different than your favorite console. But the problem is we're not talking about "favorite", we're talking about "best". Trying to come up with a "best" console is probably impossible because you can't be objective about it.
That's the great thing about gaming. As games can evoke different emotions, different people will react to them in their own ways. You can't just pick a "best" console for everybody.
@Naznatips Truer words have never been spoken, although I did play my Xbox alot more than you.

Trust me i would not want to choose for anyone, but if we look at last gen, after hearing about how innovative the wii is, only two console brought anything innovative; the xbox and the dreamcast. Being popular and successful does not equal to being the best. The xbox brought new ideas to the fold, the ps2 brought nothing new.
