Forums - Sales - The race to 45nm... PS3 vs. 360

rocketpig, take a look at PS3 sales last year. Notice all of those expensive 60GB PS3s they hard a hard time selling? Those loses clearly lean towards the beginning of last year, and we have no idea what Sony's profit (loss) margin is on the PS3 per unit. I also believe that they are still losing money, probably $100 per 40GB sold, but neither of us really knows dick about how Sony runs their business. For all we know they really could be breaking even by now.

I wasn't saying that they're not breaking even now, I'm responding to the rumor that Sony fans latched onto last December that they were breaking even on the 40GB model. That was six months ago. The January-March quarter would have definitely reflected that savings had they been breaking even on units manufactured late last year.

They could be approaching break-even now but that wasn't my point.

Around the Network

MS price cut in Europe is more like currency adjustment. Only place I would truly call price cut for them would be Japan and it definitely didn't help there.

I think MS is looking to have profitable gaming division, if they don't need to have price-cut and still move about the same units as Sony PS3 I think they will just stay put and let their 6 million lead absorb the parity in sale for this year.

I don't know, people are always quick to attack MS about their lost but Sony went from a very profitable gaming division into huge money loosing venture. Personally I think MS is happy where they are at. The consoles are still selling (ie they are growing), their on-line is doing well and generate money and most important of all 360 have sold enough 10million in the US not to be ignore by 3rd party developer. Royalty from software is like free money.

Nintendo, will likely be the very last to move to 45nm.....they are taking the option of a cheaper consolek, with older chips, and less investment, so they are betting that a console for the people is what will win this generation.
