Moving down the list we come to Metal Gear Solid 4. I'm baffled as to how this title got as many votes as it did. Metal Gear Solid is a great franchise and a solid seller, but it's not a blockbuster franchise and it's selling to the smallest userbase on the market.

I'm not baffled. Many people simply ignore the question in the poll, and simply vote on their favorite game. No one who voted for MGS4 really believes it has anywhere near a chance to become the top selling game 2008, they just selected it to promote their game on a public display.

Yeah, things like that are why I hate online polls. So I thought it would be better to start a discussion on the issue instead.

I know that there have been other threads on the issue, and I'm sure there will be many more before the endof the year, but the poll did stimulate my thoughts on the subject. So here they are.

@ Sullla

If I remember this thread at the end of the year, I'll gladly bump it to see how all my presumptions hold up. :)

If GTAIV is counted as two games (which does make sense to me in the game database, but not in an poll), WiiFit will take the top spot.

Overall ww end of year:
GTAIV (combined)
WiiFit
Mario Kart
SSBB
Gears of War 2

(DQIX might make it to the ww top 5 with Japanese sales alone, provided it´s released early enough).

I think I voted for Mario Kart Wii. I am/was hoping that it edges out SSBB (the current leader in '08 sales) by the end of the year. Mario Kart to me just seems to be the better fit for a holiday gift.

I don't see any of the non-Wii games becoming the topselling game of 2008, simply because SSBB is already above 5m without being released in Europe. As a bare minimum the game will have sold at least 7,5m units this year which makes it tough for all other games to match this number.

Basically it will be decided between SSBB and Mario Kart Wii, I voted for the latter because I hate Smash Bros. nearly as much as Mario Kart 64.

I agree with everything you said. It will come down to SSBB and MKWii, the only thing is which will sell more? I think it will be very close with MKWii edging out Smash Bros. If Japan and Europe is any indication it will have long legs in the United States. It's more recognizable brand (along with a neat peripheral) will attract the casual buyer come this November/December.

Hi there.

http://vgsales.wikia.com/wiki/Video_Game_Sales - A wiki for video game sales figures

GTA IV hands down for 2008.

1. GTA IV (X360)

2. GTA IV (PS3)

3. MK Wii

if we split gta 4 for x360 game and ps3 game than list of the best selling games will be like this:
1. wii fit
2. mario kart
3. super smash bros brawl
4 and 5. gta 4 for x360 and ps3.
if not then:
1. wii fit
2. mario kart
3. gta 4
4. super smash bros brawl

I think Wii Fit will win because it will have phenomenal legs. It is selling 30K a week in Japan. If Wii Fit sales continue at this rate in Japan that will be another 1 million in sales in Japan without adding in a Holiday boost.

1) Wii Fit
2) MK Wii
3) SSBB
4) GTA IV 360
5) GTA IV PS3

On a side note, I bet Mario and Sonic has a better chance of being top seller in 2008 than MGS. M&S has already sold 1.68 million this year, it has great legs at 90K per week WW and it will get a Olympics and Holiday boost.
