Forums - Sales Discussion - How is the Wii not in competition with the 360 and PS3?

A lot of gamers in forums say the Wii is not in competition with the 360 and PS3. But if that's true then why do Sony and Microsoft execs comment on the Wii so much? You don't hear Microsoft and Sony execs commenting about mobile games or online flash games as much as they do on the Wii, do you?

Microsoft and Sony execs are smart enough to know they are in competition with Nintendo.

Just several ways they are in competition:

1) Shelf space in stores and store advertisements

2) Third parties' attention and resources (when a developer makes one exclusive game for the Wii that could have been a game for the 360/PS3).

3) They are competeting for casual gamers. There is no doubt more casual gamers would be on the PS3 or 360 bandwagon if the Wii didn't exist.

4) They are competeting for hardcore gamers. Yes it's true. Not all hardcore gamers who own a console have a PS3/360. Many have a Wii60 or PSWii. They like what both have to offer. That $300 or so bucks they spent on the Wii and Wii games could have been spent on PS3 or 360 software.

My god.

Why did you bring this subject back up?

Did the last three threads solve anything? No... This one won't either.

We all know that...

But a lot of fanboys are in denial.

Sony doesn't make and sell a Wii Fit game. So they can't compete. Its like saying a Dvd manufacturer competes with PC makers.

Tease.

Good point squilliam. MS doesn't make a BR player AFAIK. The 360 is obviously not competing with the PS3 either.

PS3 DOMINATION!!!!

Sony themselves have claimed that the PS3 is competing with TV, the internet, and the Wii. They're losing 3 battles.

Meanwhile, the Wii is competing with everything in the universe, and winning.

Unfortunately, the Wii battled with Amaterasu, and lost.

And yes, why create a thread asking a question when there's another thread that answers this question?

Not to beat a dead horse... okay, I'm going to beat a dead horse.

The Wii does compete in some ways with the PS3 and the 360, but not as much as the PS3 and 360 compete with each other. The Wii blasted out of the gate at $250, produces very little heat, fits a very small form-factor, and has Nintendo as it's primary games publisher. We purchased a 360 2 years ago, but jumped at the chance to get a Wii... it was only $250 and fits very nicely in a small, enclosed space in our entertainment center.

Someone who already owns a 360 has to spend at least $400 to get a PS3 (or double, $500, to get one with BC). The 360 isn't quite as expensive as the PS3, but both HD consoles produce a lot of heat and take up a lot of space. Also, most of the games on the HD consoles are targeted at hard-core gamers. This is a general statement... a broad range of games exist for all 3 consoles.

So... while there *are* consumers who will pick only one console this generation, it's not as common as it was when the PS2 ruled the roost. Our PS2 had just about everything we wanted out of gaming console, primarily due to its massive installed base.

In summary, we use our Wii for parties and family gaming (Mario Kart, etc.). The 360 tends to get used for single player games (Mass Effect, Oblivion, etc.) with multiplayer FPS games primarily played when my son's friends are over for an evening.

Perhaps it would be accurate to say the Wii complements either the 360 or the PS3, but the 360 and PS3 don't really complement each other.

Just my $.02.
