Here are the Games that I would Recommend that are not Final Fantasy Related. My Personal Favorites are the Suikoden games nothing beats being able to collect 108 different people in the games. There are so many different combinations of characters that can make up your party. Radiata Stories also had a large cast of characters that you could recruit and your choices in the game affect who you can recruit. I liked the steampunk setting in Wild Arms and I also liked the Futuristic setting in Xenosaga. I will continue with my reason for recommending the games later gotta go to the Bar.
1) Suikoden (3,4,5, Tactics)
2) Wild Arms (Alter Code F, 3,4,5)
3) Xensoga Series
4) Tales of Abyss and Tales of Legendia
5) Valkyrie Profile: Slimeria
6) Radiata Stories
7) Star Ocean 3
8) Grandia 3
9) Metal Saga
10) Steambot Chronicles
Systems I own (Games)
Sega: Dreamcast (40) , Saturn (25), Genesis (50), Masters System (10), Game Gear (20)
Sony: PS1 (8), PS2 (60) , PS3 (5), PSP (12)
Atari: 2600 (18) , 7800 (10), Lynx (10)

Totally agreed. The best non FF rpg on the PS2 is Kingdom Hearts.......and dtewi, COM is on the PS2, you just have to get the Final Mix+.....KH2: Final Mix, and Kingdom Hearts: Re:Com are in there (COM gets updated to PS2 graphics, but still uses the card system)

Aha! caught you red handed with a contradiction! And yes, CC on PSX was not as good as the SNES except for the anime cutscenes. The loading times were also annoying on many of the PSX-SNES ports. But, as you said, it's still good and there's still many RPGs on the PS2/ PSX that's not listed which makes the PS3 60gb the best RPG console of all tyme! If not the PS3 60gb then the PS2. |
Well I mea sucked compared to the SNES version. Which is why I consider the SNES better even counting the SNES to PSX ports. SNES also has quite a lot of rock solid RPGs that haven't been mentioned here.
Hard to tell what's a "JRPG" or not because i don't know who made a number of games... and whether to count games like EVO in the mix.
But i mean... Lufia 1&2, Breath of Fire, Illusion of Mana, Illusion of Gaia, Terraanimiga.
Then you've got off beaten games like Robotrek.
The PS2 had more quanity, but i'd argue the SNES had more quality, with a decent amout of depth of quanity.
PS1 wise, well, i'd still take the SNES over the PS1... which I think also had higher quality.
If you combine the PS1, and PS2 RPGs together... yeah combined their better.
Though until Battlefield of the Valkrie comes out I think the PS2 has beter RPGs then the 60 Gig PS3 cause all the PS3 RPGs do is brign down the average quality.
Well actually Battlefield of the Valkrie is a SRPG not a JRPG. Unless people are counting SRPGs... then I actually do give the PS1 a nod over the SNES, because Ogre Battle is a wash per both systems, PS1 is better translated along with the port issues... and it has Tactics Ogre... which is an SNES game, but the SNES game never got localized... and Front Mission 3... and FFT.
Mostly it's Tactics Ogre that puts it over the top though... which is ironic.

Only problem with Suikoden 4 is that damn tile game. I'll sit down to progress in the game... and instead spend 4 hours gambling with that girl using lightning bolts to draw tiles and the like.

I definately agree with the statement because Suikoden 4 is the weakest of out of all the suikoden games. none the less Suikoden four was my first suikoden game in a series that I really enjoy so it holds a special place in my video gaming heart. definately wish they would release Suikoden one and two for the PSP in America. I can't afford the priceses people are aslking for the Suikoden 1 and 2.

Yeah... I agree with you on all that. I mean i've got a friend who already has Suikoden 1 &2 on his PSP but of course not in way one would hope. So i've yet to play 1 and 2.

Well basically the best titles have allready been mentioned.
RPG's
- Shim Megami Tensei series (Lucifer's Call, Digital Devil Saga 1&2, Devil Summoner and Persona 3); Strange RPG's and hard to get into, but definitely worth buying.
- Dark Chronicle; really appreciated by RPG fans (I never got a chance to buy this one :( ) In US it's called Dark Cloud 2
- Kingdom Hearts 1&2: Disney meets Final Fantasy; real classics! Don't play if you dislike FF ofcourse.
- Suikoden 5; best Suikoden of PS2 generation
- Star Ocean 3; great combatstyle / seeing enemies on world map, so you can walk passed them
- Dragon Quest VIII: great visuals and great replayvalue
- Shadow Hearts: Covenant; interesting battlesystem and for once in modern times not classic or fantasy stuff.
- Rogue Galaxy; Realtime fighting, interesting story
-Worth mentioning Arc: Twilight of the Spirits (Not a JRPG, but with a great story) battlesystem was kinda dispappionting though, Shadow Hearts: From the New World (haven't played yet), Valkyrie Profile: I won it, but lack of time prevents me to actually play it.
- Never released in EU, but worth mentioning: Radiata Stories, Tales of the Abyss/Legendia, KH: Final Mix, Xenosaga series (Part 2 got released but bombed...)
Tactical RPG's; ain't getting more JP than this tbh. :P
- Disgaea 1 + 2; really awesome, great humor, basically the best you can get in this genre
Worth Mentioning: Phantom Brave & La Pucelle Tactics (Haven't really played these too yet)

I think second best. First goes to Suikoden II, also best game ever made. Sadly, nobody played it, so it-s hard to find someone who agrees. |
You have good taste. By the way, is that a Riou avatar?
Kingdom Hearts is not even a japanese rpg is it? certainly not a traditional one..
