Full backwards compat with games and XBLA titles (if they didn't do these, that would probably be the biggest slap in the face imho) along with achivements means day one purchase of the system for me.
The other things that they should work on is console reliability and backwards accessories (I know, keep dreaming but that SF4 TE stick was expensive!).
It's just that simple.

In a way, one good thing about RROD, is that no future Microsoft consoles will have bad reliability problems, if there is one thing Microsoft want the 720 to be, its to be reliable, they won't want to deal with RROD again.

I've also thought of this and have even emailed Microsoft about this, but I never got any word back.
Like someone else mentioned, the Live ID from the original Xbox (and everything that came with it) rolled over from the original Xbox to the 360. Why would that change now?

It costs 7 times more to gain a new customer, than to keep an old one. Your old fans first, new ones come second. Yes, achievements will transfer. New customers won't NOT buy a new Xbox because of that, and old customers will see the new Xbox as a must buy.
However much is pisses off the uninitiated, it will happend, and it must happen. :P

They should. If they didn't it will of killed sales. Achievements are the best.
Achievements are the reason I play through boring games. No way they will take achievements off.
