I have a Wii and love it but think one of the more powerful consoles would complement it. Traditionally I would buy the Sony console, as I generally prefer Japanese games to Western games. However, I keep hearing bad things about PS3. I don’t really like American Halo style games, which is what X-box is famous for, but now you can get GTA 4 on 360 and apparently Treasure are gonna make games for it. Then there’s Lost Odyssey as well…

Xbox 360 has some sweet RPG's, PS3 doesn't have any noteworthy. What other genres do you like?

Generally, many good PS3 games are also available on the 360, but not vice versa. However, the 360 has the RRoD and expensive online services.

Well, I like old school action games a lot, stuff like R-type, Contra, Ghools and ghosts. I also like adventure games like Zelda etc. PS3 does seem a little short on exclusives, but its also not been out too long.

Right now 360 has broader library but it clearly still does have reliability issues and if you plan on being online you need to consider paying for MS service vs Sony's service being free.

On flip side PS3 is without question more reliable product but it has weaker library overall (although i suspect this will cease to be the case by end of year or early 2009 at latest). PS3 does get you BR if that is of interest.

I'd say have a good long look at what exclusives are known for each for at least next 12 months - i.e. 360 will have Fable and LO but PS3 will have FF plus GT5 & MGS and White Knight Story (I think that's the title) - and see which titles appeals most to you.

Multi-platform titles (of quality) are essentially the same on each now (despite pixel pouring fanboys). If you look at DMC4 or Asssassins' Creed or Burnout Paradise (or GTA IV) on a typical setup then to the average joe they look and play the same.

If I was to consider a 'tilt' approach I'd probably suggest the PS3 might be better for you as in the long run I think its more likely it will end up with a more diverse library (particularly outside of shooters) than 360 - but of course that's just my own feeling.

Or you could get a PC!

For the PS3, I'll extend into next year (a little unfair I know but since the OP doesn't like FPS, the PS3 lineup is a little weak in 2008):

By the middle of 2008, I think the lineups between the two will be comparable. The PS3 will have fewer games but more blockbusters (GT5, MGS, FF). On the other hand, the 360 will have an absolute mountain of 80+% games by that point but not quite as many blockbuster games.

Just want to say that the 360's on the market now are not the same ones with the high rate of RROD, so you don't need to worry.

Other than that point i wanted to make, both consoles are good. The way i would do it if i were you is look at the games and see which ones you like, then get the console with your games on.

Then see what games you are looking forward to and what console they are on.
