Forums - Gaming - Some Comment I heard about GTA...

you know GTA has gone prime time when you hear everybody talking about it... even on your classical music radio station.

of course, you wouldn't expect kind words for GTA from those people.  not exactly scathing either, but pretty balanced:

"It's done extremely well commercially... but when you compare a game like that with classical music, it's really on two completely different ends of a spectrum in terms of human experience."

and i thought, hmm, take two is not making donation to help any causes.  maybe they can generate some positive PR by doing so, like Nintendo with its small $25,000 donation to the american heart association.  or Sony's donation of a PS3 or something like that to sick kids.

anyway, it did put the gaming experience into more perspective when they say it that way.

Comparing classical music to GTA4 is a blasphemy in my opinion. Actually, comparing pretty much all video games to classical doesn't make sense at all so I can't picture really why he did it.

How many cups of darkness have I drank over the years? Even I don't know...

I think im missing the links your drawing betwene the quote and your thoughts about donations and putting gaming into perspective???

Its strange for that guy to compare gta to music, its like saying, gta is cool but will never be an icon like clasical music. On a gamer scale gta is iconic but on a worldly scale it's not as iconic as something that defined a time period like clasical music.

Are you thinking that gaming pales in comparison to world issues? or like that gaming is not as important as other things? or that these games wont be remembered like clasical music is?

If at first you don't succeed, you fail

On the other hand, games like Zelda and Mario Galaxy have theme's that wouldn't be out of place on a classical concert - as evident already if you look it up on youtube...

Having a piece of music played by an orchestra doesn't make it classical.

Seriously, Wagner is spinning so fast in his grave over that comment that it will probably affect the Earth's rotation.

@ Godot

It makes perfect sense. Music and videogames are both creative endeavours, even if the latter is not yet taken seriously as a legitimate artform.
