Forums - Website Topics - Discussion on User-Created Groups

Other tidbits to discuss:

- Users can only create X number of groups and join Y number of groups.
- Only users with a certain post count can create groups.
- It costs vg$ to create/join a group, or only to do so beyond some limit.

Hmmmm sorry but those limetations are bad. Lets say I want to create a group for the leagues I am doing with the league bot. I would have problems with point 2 and 3 (since it was banned 2 times, because I did not inform you mods, and nobody gave him the money back).

In general I see 2 sides. On the one hand, I noticed that the activity in the forum went down while "Section 8" was active. I wasn't invited, so I only saw afterwards why. Those things has an "elite" smell. I think the normal forum will slow down if such a thing gets implemented, and that may stop new users to get into here, because it seems not so active in the first place. Also posts in those "groups" may be hard to find. If I know want to search of a topic, I just don't use the hottoppics and go to the forum pages (Nintendo, etc). With such groups you have to go to many many pages on the site to get search for a topic.

On the other hand, this site grows, fast. If you look at any subform, have of the first page are stickys. Maybe it would help to seperate things more. So maybe such a thing would help to grow the site even more. And since the forum takes plain html you could do a lot of things witch such a feature ;)

I might never use this feature anyway, but I think each person should only be allowed to create one group. That way the maximum number of groups is less than the number of members. We don't want too many duplicate groups and members who create one group for every game they like. Who wants to take care of multiple groups anyways? Trying to keep track of all the funtastic VGC drama is crazy enough as it is.

Sounds like a good idea.

I joined vgchartz as it is now and although there are a few problems. It is a great site. I would not like to see this site go down any route which leads to fractures and pointless arguments between its members.

.... Would the ability to send group pms between multiple members fill the gap?...

Oh yes, I want this feature! Would it make it so much easier to send newsletter for the leagues, and save some traffic ;)

You already know my oppinon on this ioi, its very simple, you have to trust the members of this site who have put their trust in you for a long time now, if you don´t return the favor and trust them to go where they want, meet who they want and choose their own supervision, then the mutual bonds of trust turn into chains of oppression. This isn´t good for you and it isn´t good for the users who have trusted you and supported this site for so long.

How about you rethink the club/clan suggestion but make it less messy... users who want to make a club have to have been here for a certain time and need the support of a number of other members to make a club. They can only have limited members but get to invite more over time if they prove they are mature, they can chose to be open for views of others and have to chose at least two mods of their choice who suppervise them.

I like the groups idea, as long as it has a hard limit on it. If group creation is unlimited, I'd bet within one month that a large slice of the groups would be created by a small portion of the userbase. Some people will just go nuts with this if there are no limits.

If there are groups/clubs allowed, here are some ideas for the limitations...

Only allow a few clubs to be created per person. Perhaps the amount of clubs to be created by one person should be scaled, based on how long they have been signed up and post count(a reasonable post count, nothing too high).

Maybe each group/club should have a monthly VGbucks charge to it? I'd gladly shell out the VGbucks to have a retro group/club/forum. You could even allow members to check a box allowing a percentage of the monthly charge to be taken from their account to chip in. This would also help weed out useless and lifeless groups, as well as being a good drain for VGbucks.

Having benefits to VGbucks, the age of your account, and your post count would help discourage people from getting themselves banned also. As it is now, there are few privileges to being around a while and building up a post count. We all know some people don't care about their identity here and will create alt accounts. Giving some perks to sticking around and posting with one profile would at least discourage that sort of thing to certain people.

And I would not want silly groups created just as jokes, like "The Shrine of QuiGonTCB" or "QuiGonTCB's Concubine". If that kind of thing is allowed, I'd just rather we not have groups.

With that in mind, if there were a "Retro Gaming" forum, I probably wouldn't even care to have groups. :)

And you already know my opinion on it.

The minute we start creating exclusive groups and clubs that exclude other members we have bad feeling amongst people. I can't trust "you" (i.e the community) - if I could we wouldn't have the need for moderators, bans and rules. Actually running a site for nearly 3 years shows you what works and what doesn't and leaving people to do what they want does not work I'm afraid.

The reason I have yet to find a solution I am happy with is pretty fundamental - who joins and leaves a particular "group" needs to be controlled in a natural way, not by having to enforce some sort of control or condition on who is allowed to join. Anybody should be free to join any group, just that most people don't want to join most groups. There should be a way of finding and talking to like-minded people without having to physically exclude others because that is where the problems begin.

Don't you think it is a little odd that you head moderator and helper (besides "TheSource") make a public post how to do private clubs (named groups) and you posting than that you basicly don't want them anyway?¿?

personal i love the ideas of clubs......

but the fact remains you will always have people that want to belong to them that wont, and they will complain
